rear differential 700 1983

I have recently seen an interesting kit from a company called Powertrax that installs in the differential to make it into a limited slip unit. They offer a number of models to fit various Dana differentials that are fitted to Jeeps and other vehicles. I recall reading somewhere that my Volvo, a 1983 760 has a Dana differential. Does anyone know which Dana model is fitted to this car?

    Re: rear differential 700 1983

    Jim,

Do not mistake a Powertax for a limited-slip unit. A Powertrax will turn your rear dif into a locker....big difference. The locker, as the name indicates will lock both rear wheels together nearly all the time. Advantages of a locker: ultimate traction (of supreme importance in the Jeeping world) In the Volvo street world this may not be a good thing. Lockers can be noisy. They can jerk a vehicle around in corners. they wear tires faster. Lockers will tend to push your car forward, even if your wheels are turned. This is especially true in winter conditions. Icy road conditions and a locker are a dangerous combination. Being an old Jeeper for 15 years, I know this product well. If going in a straight line as fast as possible is your only game, go for it. These units are very durable. I have used them for nearly 10 years in my "off-road only" Jeep. I have yet to break one or wear one out. I run tires that are 36 inches tall X 13 inches wide, which gives you an indication of the stress I put them through. On the up side, if you don't like it, you can remove it, return your rear to stock, and sell it to a Jeeper in an afternoon. By the way the Dana 30 has been used in the front of Jeeps from the late 60 till today. If your Volvo is a grocery getter and an everyday driver, you'll probably hate owning a locker. There are many excellent true posi-traction (limited slip) units avaiable for a Dana 30. Power transfer with a posi is seamless and winter driving is hardly an issue. They are more expensive and installation is best left to the pros. In my Jeep, it's lockers forever. In my brick....never.

thanks for the info on the Dana 30 and Powertrax. According to their website

information at Powertrax.com, they are now offering a new product which is

similar in design to one of their older products, which they refer to as a

locker. This new product is claimed to be a true limited slip by virtue of

springs that keep the differential open except when wheelspin occurs on one

side. Do you think these claims could be true? If you're interested, you

might want to visit their website and take a look. I'd certainly appreciate

your opinion on this new unit.

If this unit is not a good choice, what might be other sources of information

that I might access to learn about my other choices? For reference, my Volvo

has been converted to a 5.0 Mustang HO engine and AOD automatic transmission,

while retaining the stock Volvo rear end. I get a lot of wheelspin with

aggressive throttle, and hence the interest in the limited slip.

      Regards,

      Jim Faler

        Re: rear differential 700 1983

        Jim,

This is a new product that I am not familiar with. I can tell you that every Powertrax product I have used has been of excellent quality and workmanship. A Mustang 5.0 has a rear dif equipped with an 8.8 inch ring gear and a 28 spline 1.28 inch axle shaft. In comparison, the Dana 30 has a 7.25 inch ring gear. It also has 27 spline 1.28 inch axle shafts. You will need to verify the Volvo version of the 30 consists of the same. I would tend to think it would. However I have never taken a Volvo version apart. With some care a 30 should hold up pretty well behind a 5.0. One thing to note about a Powertrax is it uses your stock differential case. The spider gears are all that's replaced. That means your LSD will only be as strong as a stock case. If you should decide on the new Powertrax LDS, be sure and have the case checked for cracks. Make sure you replace the differential cross pin. And finally inspect and replace, if necesary, the side thrust washers. If this new product is a true limited slip, go for it. You can save quite a bit by installing it yourself. Good luck! I'd like to know how it turns out. A v-8 745 will be my next project.
