It was the timing belt. 200 84Turbo

My breakdown on Sunday night was the timing belt. It stripped a little first which is why I continued to run for a mile or so. I'm guessing that running retarded also caused my turbo and mani to go molten red, but I'm no expert.

It turns out I'm going to need a radiator too. I'm about to search the archives for suggestions, but if anyone has any input on best quality/price for a metal radiator for an 84 240 Turbo, I'd be glad to hear it.

Thanks,

Jake

I saw something on this RWD section look at Sunday 3rd dates..."Are Nissens Radiators aftermarket in Volvos". maybe there's some help there

Re: It was the timing belt. 200 84Turbo

Just for everyone's info. Just got off the phone with Import Parts Specialists in Boise and have some current prices for the good people of Brickboard. For my 84 240 Turbo:

    Timing Belt: $7.99

    Tensioner: $20.99

    Water Pump (GMB): $27.99

    Nissens Copper 3-row radiator: $189.95

Seems like some damn good prices to me.

Incidentally, asked the guy on the phone, Rick, about the stamped/casted impellers on water pumps, and he told me that the GMB is cast, not stamped, as has been rumored. But, to allay the fears of disbelievers, they carry the HEPU pump for a few $ more.

    Later,

    Jake

For a radiator, you might want to see Ebay Item #516343331. If you can't wait for the auction to end, I'd recommend you email them and ask if they'll sell you one for the opening bid price. They've sold a couple of them in the past 2 weeks at the opening bid of 159.99.

      Good luck.

Good news in a strange way...I hope you get it set up and going as quickly.

Good prices. I've never had an pump impeller problem, just a stem leak problem. (But somehow without hanging that fan (ie electric fan) my water pump now seems bullet proof...)

      What's a HEPU anyway?

        Paul,

HEPU is just another brand name, but one that gets more good press than GMB, for the reasons Dave listed below.

Thanks. So is HEPU the current Volvo OEM?

        Water Pump 200 84Turbo

Good info on water pumps. My 84 B21FT-IBS pump is starting to leak. WHat are your opinions about best pump for a turbo motor? From the discussion, Cast impeller I'd guess but what else? Dealer wants $103 and I have to wait at least a week to get it. Thanks, Robert

          Re: Water Pump 200 84Turbo

I know this belongs in Opinions, but the fact you would have to wait a week to get a water pump really pisses me off. We RWDers seem to be turning into the bastard children of Volvo. I went to one local dealer Saturday to get a relay mounting block for my 740 and I was told I would have to wait until Tuesday to get it. I went to another dealer and while they had the mount, no spade lugs and they didn't even know what the part number was to order it despite the many pics on their computer.

Getting parts must be really bad when the closest dealer is a couple of hundred miles away so I should count my blessings that there are several in the area.

          good luck.

            Re: Water Pump 200 84Turbo

Yeah I know and thanks. The parts guy says he only keeps one on the shelf and he sold it two days ago (84 and earlier aren't that much in demand). You've all been there done that at the parts counter I'm sureSince my turbo needs most reliable cooling I'll keep looking and thanks again. Sounds like HEPU w/cast impeller and good reliability, or the Volvo part might be the right choice. All Volvo dealers give VCOA discounts? Good reason to join!?

I'd get the HEPU from Import Parts Specialists. You'll get it quicker than the dealer model and it will be half the price.

Is that $103 after a VCOA discount, because if not, you could probably save at least 20% on that price.

I stick with the Volvo pump...but heck if I know who the current manufacturer is!

Re: It was the timing belt. 200 84Turbo

Every GMB pump has the stamped steel impeller. The HEPU pump has what

appears to be a cast brass impeller. The problem I've had with the

GMB pumps is that they don't last. I never had one last more than

2 years. What good is a lifetime warranty if you have to replace the

thing every couple of years? If your car was a normally aspirated model

maybe the pump may last. I never had one last in my turbo though.

The prices are awesome, I really like the price on the radiator, if that

is the three core. Thank you for the info.

      Dave 82 242ti, have a nice holiday.
