Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

I lost the GREEN gas cap for my 1990 240 and wanted to know if the RED one off my retired 1986 240 will work the same. Because other than the color I don't believe there were really any differences. Does anyone know if there are any differences worth noting????

THE COLOR!

:)

ok, i had to do that one.

as long as you can get the gas in the car and go, that's what matters.

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

If you use a red cap on your tank instead of the mandatory green cap then your wipers won't work right. They'll go left-to-right instead of right-to-left, as required.

Sorry — couldn't help myself. All my 240s have a red cap, and my 740 has a green cap. But when I drop the cap on the ground too often, the plastic breaks, and then it's metal and not red or green.

I'd use any damned cap that keeps my gas in and the rodents out.

Do this: Try your red cap, and see if the car drives OK through a complete fill-up.

And check the wipers for compliance.

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

Red cap is for left (port) side fill. Green cap is for the right. This way you can tell which end of your car is the front.

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

i'm not of nautical persuation so, can't really tell the left from the right (how do you really know??? if i'm looking at the car from the front, one side is the right and the other is left. if i'm looking at the rear <> the other side is the right and so on. don't get me into mentioning the use of mirrors......)

all i need to know is what if your 'filler' is in the rear???

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

I think you got it all wrong, because, if you are standing at the SIDE of the car, then one end should be the front and the other the rear. So, if you are standing at the PORT SIDE and you want to go in reverse, then you may check the cap and then proceed towards the right. And, if your cap is wrong, then the impending crash will be your own damned fault. The color is a safety feature, and was installed for this purpose by the MVC so that these kinds of things won't happen.

Matey

As you stand astern (behind) your craft, the left (short word) is the port. When you sloop your mooring in the night, you need to display a red (short word) light on the left side. The right side (long word)is the starboard. You need to display a green light. Maritime regulations require a white light aft, or in the back. Do not try ty this on dry land or you will meet the constabulary. I'd schooner stay home than talk to the law.

GM cars fill in the back, Volvos fill on the side.

"Red right returning."

Buoy! I shoulda known that — I been mizzen something! (And you can ketch me often.)

'Cept it's the other way 'round. The green cap is on the port side of my 740, and the red cap on the starboard side of my 240.

Oh, wait. Lemme go astern, face backwards, and look over my shoulder.

OK, that works.

Maybe my car is upside down. Will this keep the tires from wearing?

Yes, but the gas mileage goes to hell.

Yawl: I know this may sound a little dinghy, but wasn't the oarigional reason that the gas caps were colored to make them easier to sea? And that is aboat all I really know.

These Sound Like Don Beyer Volvo Commercials 200 90

They do many on air commercials in this vein. Their latest is from Roman times and the lease price is CCCXXXIV per month.

Lots of Laughs today. Don, it reminds me of your relay probing exercise, daily I might add.

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

This is a European thing.

Red is for Leaded Gas

Green is for Unleaded Gas

Black is for Diesel

Unleaded gas (and catalitic converters) has only been introduces (CAT - manditory) since 1992. Fill up a post '92 car with leaded petrol and your CAT is gone.

All fillup stations in Europe use these colour codes. So in case you do not know what your car can take, you only have to follow the cap colour and fill up nozzle colour (for the idiot really).

They also made the nozzle of unleaded fill-up gun smaller together with the hole of the fillup oil in your car. You cannot unsert the Unleaded nozzle (red) in an post '92 car (green).

Reg,

Perhaps, but only in Europe.

All my 240's have red caps, none use leaded gas. In fact, I wouldn't know where to buy leaded gas.

Thanks Jorn, that's the answer I was essentially looking for. It's nice to have fellow bricksters who aren't so captivated with water craft.

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

There's no difference. I had a red one on a diesel Volvo, and a green one on one of my gas-powered Volvos. Which is just the opposite of what it SHOULD be! I threw out my green one to put a red, locking Volvo cap on my 91. The rest of them have green caps.

Re: Gas cap differences RED and GREEN???? 200 90

I asked a question about these caps few weeks back because I have one 760 with a Green cap that uses regular 87 octane gas, and another 760 that says Premium Unleaded only and it has a Red gas cap. I'm pretty sure it was to make it easy to identify which grade of fuel to use, but nobody could answer for sure.
