limited slip differential 200 1975

I just bought a limitede slip rear-axle that came from a 740. its from a multilink rear axle... I'm planning on installing the lock to a 240-axle...

the 240 axle is a old one, probably from a seventies car... ratio: 3,9:1

im not sure that it fits, the axle looks the same, the 740 have a speedosensor on the backcover, but that seems to be the major difference...

what i need are som good tips on a complete rear-axle rebuild... howto measure the right "tightness" in the bearings, howto get the right "touch" on the gears with somekind of color...

ideas?..

thanks..

Re: limited slip differential 200 1975

Look for a tag on the left side of the housing which tells the style. Limited slip for multilink is 1045 type. If it reads 1035, it's the standard differential inside.

Wouldn't it be easier to find a locking type 240 axle (style 1031, and 1041 is the HD version) in good shape and just bolt it in?

Re: limited slip differential 200 1975

Multilink never came in a 740. Only 760, 780, 940SE, 960. If the rear you got is not from a 1991 or newer, it's not likely to be antispin either.

Re: limited slip differential 200 1975

i'm not sure about what they really mean with multilink... its a stiff, conventional axle. it's got one control arm in each end and two in the center...

it is a antispin for sure... i know one when i open one! :)
