wet floors in volvo 240 wagon 200 1990

I have a 240 wagon with wet floors and don't know the source. It does not have a sun roof so that is out. Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

ScottSC

Scott I had had this problem on 2 different 245 wagons. Do you park on a slight downhill incline? Check the cargo window gaskets (rear quarter panel) What happens is the drain holes in the gasket get plugged with silt over time and the water can't drain out, so it takes the path of least resistance and fills up the glass cavity and into the car following the floorboard to the front seat footwell.

What worked for me was to GENTLY probe the front and rear ends of the gasket with a DULL icepick or similar long pointed tool. The channel below the glass is intended to carry off the water at those two points. Insert the DULL tool into the rubber channel and work it front to rear, etc. At the ends gently probe for the outlet holes and you will see the crud come

out. ( you need wet conditions to flush out the silt.)

These wet conditions drove my persnickety wife CRAZY!! It led to mildew problems and trips to the auto glass shops, Volvo independent shop and all they did was make the problem worse. This is a simple fix, it works!!

Re: wet floors in volvo 240 wagon 200 1990

If you have checked all the obvious places like windshield & wiper shaft rubbers, here is the real doozie that caused my leak: The air intake grill (between the hood and the windshield), for the heater has a drain built into the internal structural channel. This drains down through the internal channel behind the fuses, and then out the little hole in the rocker guard. You can find it by removing the inside panel and looking with a flashlight while running a hose into the grill. My car had apparently had an accident before I bought it and some of the internal bracinfg was bent so that the water splashed down onto the car, instead of following Volvo's intended path to the drain. Good luck.

Everything that goes through the firewall is a potential source: windshield wiper motor shaft, wiring bundles, throttle cable, etc.

Also, a common problem on mid-80's wagons was the cargo panel windows leaked badly once the caulk dried up. This water rund down the "C" pillar under the rear bench seat and comes out at the edges of the bench onto the floor. Also gets down into the wheel arches somehow and rots out the rear end of the rocker panels.

Believe me, you don't want this repair!

Lift the rubber gasket along the front lower corner of each panel window from the inside and trace rearwards, checking for rust under the gasket. A flexible 1.5" wide putty knife is handy for doing this.

Window will need to come out in order to make repairs and to reseal.

Which floor is wet, the front or the back?

My wet front floors were caused by the bottom of the windshield being unbonded. Glass shop took care of that problem.

Carefully check your rear wheelwells. In my '83 DL a well hidden hole was a pretty efficient source of water on the rear floor.

    Scott,

Check the drain under the heater box. You may have to remove the passenger side panel under the dash. You can reach in with your hand a feel for rubber tube that drain water under the car. If its clogged water will gladly come inside the car. Also, make sure your cowl is not plugged with leaves, that will also let water inside. Good luck.

To keep the thread going I will also respond here. As you suggest I will check for the drain hose. I do not understand cowl or where it is located.

Again thanks for your advise I will check this out.

All the previous replies are good possibilities. I had a 245 which leaked where the roof rack bolted on the top of the car. Also had a front leak around the upper door hinge bolts on the passenger door.
