Does anyone know what year the sips system was introduced in the 700 series? Im thinking either 91 or 92. Thanks for your help.

SIPS was a feature of the new 900 series in '91. In '92, it was incorporated into the 700 series (which were only available as wagons in this final year.) The difference between a 940 and 740 wagon in '92 amounted to badges, basically.

SIPS consisted of some specially-shaped body members in the B-pillar, roof, seats and floorpan designed to stiffen the 'safety cage' against lateral intrusions.

My 92 745 has sips. What that actually means as far as physical hardware and how it's supposed to work...I dunno. Assumedly it's steel braces in the doors? Any clarification would be appreciated.

I think it is the beams in the doors, in conjuction with extra strength in the form of a new casting in the chasis from side to side, can't remember exactly what the difference was though. I am sure someone else will remember more

I've got a driver-side air bag in my 1990 740 Turbo Sedan. Hope this is helpful.
