Milky stuff on oil cap 200 1983

I know this has been mentioned already, but the search engine doesn't seem to be working, ditto with the archives. Anyhow, what does having milky stuff on your oil cap mean? Is it serious? Thanks!

It's condensation, and is usually not serious.

Water vapor is a major byproduct of combustion, and some combustion gasses leak into the crankcase (blowby). So the H2O component will condense on the inside of cool surfaces, such as the oil cap and probably the entire cam cover.

In this weather it's worse with short trips. Allowing the engine to get good and hot should evaporate it. So even if you're only going from Woburn to Waltham, go by way of Worcester.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like you might have a leaking head gasket. Watch the oil level for a while. If it goes up then that may be it. You didn't mention if the oil was that way too?

I agree with both responses.Look at the dipstick and drain the crankcase, if the oil is also milky I would suspect the head gasket.I believe you would also detect an anti freeze odor coming out of the exhaust if the head gasket were in need of replacement as well as periodicaly having to top off the radiator expansion tank. Tell your neighbors that you are not trying to commit suicide when they see you with your head at the exhaust pipe. Good luck!
