Oil on waterpump 200 89

Noticed it yesterday, when I was putting in the lights. Not coming from the valve cover, but the large rubber feed hose has oil on it as well. Just had the seals replaced 5k ago, and the belt cover is dry. It runs fine, oil level and coolant level are normal, but I can't figure out where the stuff came from. Another thing is that it looks like clean, fresh oil, and my crankcase oil has about 4k on it and is dirty.

Or maybe I was sleepwalking and went out to add some oil and dumped it on the water pump instead...I'm not gonna get into the Freudian implications here... &^)

It could be the front camshaft seal leaking. I've had oil leak out from that seal and it gets behind the plastic timing belt cover and ends up on top of the water pump. I thought it was my head gasket leaking until I checked it out. The camshaft seal is not too hard to change, especially if you're going to be changing the timing belt anyway.

Either the cam seal is leaking or the VC gasket is split where it goes over the top of the cam journal. Oh, and just because everone will say it I will too. Clean the breather.

The oil will look cleaner if you put it out in a thin layer, so it is most likely from inside your own motor. Or do you have friends with warped senses of humor?

The flametrap and surrounding hoses are totally clear, and have been since I bought the car a year and 30k ago. I do check, but everything always looks the same.

The thing that worries me is that squishy rubber hose that goes into the block. I'm hoping the oil doesn't make it more squishy.

I'd replace the cheap gasket on the oil filler cap. Amazing how quick they dry up and don't seal. I replace them about every three years.
