Hi, I own a 1995 964 (mileage about 60,000 miles). The driver's electric seat is unable to move forwards and backwards but is still able to recline, and be raised or lowered. A friend told me that these seats function by air and as long as I hear the motor working then it's probably a leaking air seal that is the problem. Does anyone know if it's costly to repair? Would it take a lot of technical knowledge to fix or could it be done at home. Hope someone can help. Thanks. Randy Choo, Singapore.

On second thought, take a look at the switch for this function: it may have failed or have dirt inside. See the FAQ for disassembly instructions.

Randy, they run on electric motors (beneath) with rotary cables engaging the movement cams and gears. The problem is likely a cable ferrule out of position, a cable jammed, or a motor fault. To fix it, you will have to remove the seat from the car. See the post at today's RWD forum describing how to remove the seats.
