Trunk leaks 700 1990

Has anybody had experience with leaking water through the gutter surrounding the trunk opening? I have examined the forward gutter where it turns at the side and runs toward the back of the car. I can't find any breaks in the gutter, or loose screws, but when it rains water drips from the underside of gutter & puddles in the wells on each side of the trunk.

I'm assuming that some type coating may prevent this. I could use help if anybody has experience with this problem.

    Re: Trunk leaks 700 1989

Three '80's 240's all leaked in the trunk. rubber rejuvenator (not armourall) and trunk lid height adjustment, lowering trunk lid toward seal for a tighter seal solved problem. Adjustment is on the trunk lid hinges.

Had to replace lid seal on one, $40 @ boneyard in Seattle. Rubber rejuvenator before putting it on and every once in a while after cured

    problem.

I've looked at several 240's for sale and the degeneration of the seal shows as missing pieces, or missing surface cover, which shows sorta like the difference between the top and the interior of a brownie. The drains, top @ both corners are small and get clogged easily. The next step of bad seal degredation in my experience is rust breaking through the paint @ the back edge of the body (interestingly enough, not on the trunk lid), above the rear bumper.

    Hope that helps

Don't forget the tail lights. They can leak and fool you on where the water is coming from.

I think there are drains for the gutter that go down each side in the trunk. Look for the plastic hoses on each side behind the carpet. I had a 89 744tic+ and I remember seeing those. They might be clogged, or the seal might need replacing. It also might have been in a rear end accident and it was not repaired properly. Hope that helps.

    Re: Trunk leaks 700 1990

I have this problem on my 80 240 and it happens the wrost when I go through those drive thru car washes. That makes sense that water would get pushed sideways through the trunk opening. But when it rains it stumps me as to why this happens. I have just leadrned to deal with it and no longer put things on the sied of the trunk.

Good Luck and I hope to find out why it happens too

    Adam

You've probably already got past my point. My trunk leaked, but that's cuz the previous owner never cleaned out the leaves and twigs that got caught in the seal.

After close inspection, I think the water leaked in near the rear window. I'll have to look again. But you said your leaks are on the sides of the trunk?
