You may be interested in a document on swedishbricks.net called "140/240 model FAQ." It details the differences of all model years of 140/240 from 1967 to 1993.

I printed it out some time ago - I imagine it's still there on the site.

Re: Differenc between 240 Wagon made in 1990 and 1991 200 1990

From http://www.volvonet.org/tpc/:

"1990 - 240GL discontinued. Base 240 model introduced. Driver-side airbag standard. Power windows become standard on DL model. Radio optional on base model.

1991 - 240DL discontinued. Radio now standard on base 240 as are power windows. 240SE model introduced (added stuff, special alloy wheels). ABS introduced. New air conditioning system introduced with simplicity of 1973-77 system. Leather interior optional on base 240. Automatic transmission gains ASL (automatic shift lock) system. Rear hatch on 245 changed over to aluminum with flush glass and relocated rear window washer. Windshield now one-piece (no brightwork), as is rear window on 244 models. Warning lights now all without white lettering. Right side rear fog light removed."

Re: Differenc between 240 Wagon made in 1990 and 1991 200 1990

I own a 1990 wagon, my brother owns a 1991. Brother has no garage, so he borrows mine, therefore I've been helping him work on his '89. I have looked at many 245s while shopping for a car for myself and helping my brother find his. Based on this, I have to dispute a couple of the things in the 240 spotters guide:

1990: Every 245 I've seen at has the flush rear glass. I know that the tailgate on my '90 has never been replaced - the two previous owners are relatives.

1991: After seeing the comment about the aluminum tailgate about a year ago, I bring a magnet whenever I check out a 245. I have never found a non-steel tailgate on any '91 or '92 245. I have yet to check out a '93.

Hmm that's interesting, I have a 90 that's a 240DL, and I don't know if the rear hatch is Al, but the glass is flush, and the squirter is in the new location. And the warning lights don't have the white lettering. But it's definitely a 90, and it's all the oringinal stuff. And I've seen other 90's that are the same thing.

Changes I know for sure are the front windshield, ABS, and the rear fog lights.

Perhaps it was built late in the model year? I would have suggested that the tailgate was damaged and replaced with a newer one, but I suspect you've owned the car since new since you mentioned it was all original. You can determine if it's aluminum by using a magnet. Does the car (or has it ever) had the chrome windshield trim (pre-'91) or does it have the flush black trim ('91-on)?

Re: Differenc between 240 Wagon made in 1990 and 1991 200 1990

Yes, it has the combination of flush rear glass, and the chrome windshield trim. Funny thing is that I met a guy who had a 90 just like mine, and I knew it was a 90 because it had the same features.

Maybe they were "90.5"s or something like you suggest. I'm not sure when mine was made.

Re: Differenc between 240 Wagon made in 1990 and 1991 200 1990

On one of the front doors there should be a sticker that has the date of production (I don't remember which door, but it should be right around the latch when you open the door). Using the VIN number, I believe you can tell where your car fell within the production of other 245's of the same year, based on the chassis number (last 6 digits of VIN#).

Decoding the VIN#

240 Production Totals

There's also a '90 245 DL on ebay right now (Item #515588636) that has the flush rear window and the chrome windshield trim. Maybe the tail gate was a mid-year change?

Re: Differenc between 240 Wagon made in 1990 and 1991 200 1990

I work on my mom's 90 wagon all the time and it has the chrome windshield

trim and the new for 1990 flush rear window. The volvo buyers guide that

I have lists the change of the rear window for 1990. The changes that I

know of from 90 - 91 are:

New plastic heater control valve. Looks like the one they use for 700s.

Power steering reservoir 1991 relocated to above the pump to make room

for ABS unit.

Of course the new windshield trim.

There are probably some other changes but I listed what I know for sure.

I have a new question, I hope this is not an imposition. I have wet floors in a 240 wagon 90-91, I keep hoping to find an answer to this problem. Any advise would be helpful.

thanks

Re: Differenc between 240 Wagon made in 1990 and 1991 200 1990

I don't know all the places where water can enter, but I had a 240 which had a wet floor on the passenger side. It turned out the water was getting in around the top hinge bolts. I had to remove the side kick panel and watch from the inside while my wife ran a hose over the car starting at the bottom and working up. Covering the bolts on the inside and the meeting place of the hinge and body on the outside fixed the problem.
