89 760 wagon front seat removal help 700 1989

has anyone had any experience removing the front seat cushions from an 89 760 turbo wagon. i assume it's pretty much standard for most of the volvo models. the lining for my front passenger and driver's side seat has become to come undone, and i wanted to fix it. i went to take it off, but the electric seat adjustment panel(which is fried) is in the way of this little bitch of a screw. any suggestions?

    Steve Ringlee:

PLEASE show us ignorant beginners where your instructions are, telling us how to remove the front seats from a 700 series car/wagon. I've done lots of 200's but the 700 is a more wily beast. If you could, step by step is best for me. Thanks a lot, Genaro..

You really have to take the seat out of the car for ease of access and visibility. I just did this and wrote it up; it's in the Archives.

To take out the front seat:

      1) unbolt the seatbelt from the seat.

      2) unfasten any electrical stuff

      3) pop off plastic covers to 4 bolts holding the seat down. There's 2 ways to do this (at least in my car). Either push down and slide away from the seat, or take a pocket knife and wedge the edges of the plastic thing. I wish I had my car w/me, I'd take a pic.

      4) Unbolt 4 bolts

      5) Get in the back seat, bend over, and with one hand near the base of the seat and the other near the shoulder area (for balance), slide the seat all the way back; then push forward a bit (.25 inches). Then pull/tilt the rear of the seat up. What you're looking for is trying to get a lug out of the keyhole shaped cutout on the floor of the car. If you didn't get it the first time, slide the chair forward or backward slightly and pull up again.

Once it's out of the lug, put the seat in the most upright position (seatback 90 degrees to the seat) and take the seat out of the front door. I did this standing right outside the front door (pretend it's the driver side). My left hand grabs the bottom front underside of the seat. My right hand holds either the headrest or shoulder area. Then lift and take out. Try not to mess up your back. I'm pretty athletic so it wasn't a problem.

Good luck taking off the seat covers. That's my next project.

      Jay

        Re: 760 wagon front seat 700 1987

        Good post.

I have a different question that I can tell by your post you could help me with. Our drives seat is all the way forward, and the power switch won't engage the motors to move it back. Fuse is ok.

I think if I could disconnect the wiring (step 2 of your post) I could clean what looks like a pretty dirty switch box, but not apparent how to do that other than disconnecting the solder joints on the circuit board under the switch, and that sure doesn't seem like the right way. Could you help?

Alternatively, I thought I could jump a pair of wires that are attached to the board, but which pair to move the seat back?

        Thanks for your help.

I don't think I'm qualified to answer your question. I only know how to remove the chair and not how to repair the switches. Sorry. If anybody else know s how to fix the switches, please post!

Re: 89 760 wagon front seat removal help 700 1989

Here's the latest version, modified from Jay's:

To remove the front seats in the 700/900 series:

        1) Unscrew the side seat pocket. Unbolt the seatbelt retractor from the seat (reinstall at 35 ft-lbs).

        2) Unscrew the plastic cover to the outboard front corner bolt.

        3) Disconnect the wire harness connectors located near the outboard front corner of the seat track.

        4) Pop off plastic covers to 2 rear bolts holding the seat down. There's 2 ways to do this (at least in my car): either push down and slide away from the seat, or take a pocket knife and wedge the edges of the plastic thing.

        5) Unbolt 4 bolts (reinstall at 35 ft-lbs)

        6) Get in the back seat, bend over, and with one hand near the base of the seat and the other near the shoulder area (for balance), slide the seat all the way back; then push forward a bit (.25 inches). You may need to lever the rear of the seat track up over the back detent. Then pull/tilt the rear of the seat up.

It's much easier on your back if you have a helper to maneuver the seat out with out tearing up your door panels etc.

Dood, thanx for covering me. After reading the modified ver, it looks like I missed a few steps (like the seat pocket). That's cuz mine where ripped off (previous owner). Thanx dood! (maybe this should be archived or replace the FAQ ver?)
