Heater Temp Control 200 82

Is it common for the heater temperature control to not work well? In my car (1982; 261,500 mi) I get cool air when the control is all the way to the left; I get hot air all the rest of the way across. There doesn't appear to be any gradient to the temperature at all.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Quite common symptom, very common failure.

In '90 or '91, Volvo switched to a newer style valve (a gate valve) for the 240, whereas the original is a thermostatic valve. They sell a kit to retrofit the new valve into an older car.

I've installed a retrofit kit into an '89—it works well, but the instalation is a tedious three hours, sore knees, and skinned knuckles.

Somewhere I have the Volvo number for the kit if you want it.

Frankly, I think I'd find someone who has an exact replacement heater valve.

Well, I may or may not upgrade, but I would appreciate the kit number. Not a rush; whenever it's convienent.

You need a new Heater Control Valve. I got mine at IPD. With the valve working correctly the temperature of the air coming out of the heater is controled by the sliding lever, and is quite independent of the outside temperature. That is - at 20 below, the temperature of the air going into the cabin is nearly the same as at 40 above for the same lever position.

Mine used to work like yours and it drove me crazy, now it is great.

How hard is the valve to install? Difficulty level and time.

I have the same problem on our newly purchased 245, cold air all the way on the left, but the right 3/4 of the lever range is full hot, no middle ground.

      TIA
