Help! starts right up, dies right down 200 84

Like I said, it starts right up, then immediately will die. If you play with the

accelerator you can coax it alive, but it takes real patience and determination

to get the rpms up, then it will sound like it's running and then conk out. It's like

an oscillation of everything ok, then totally dead, then ok, then dead; you keep

it running by having the rpms high enough so that engine can coast through the dead zone.

I checked resistance in temp coolant sensor.... ok

Spark looks ok.....seems to be firing strong during the dead zone.

Cleaned all fuses.....seemed to improve! Longer alive zone, shorter dead zone. Maybe it was my

imagination.

Fuel delivery seems fast and strong (low tech remove fuel feed-in method and see how fast you

can fill the can)

Getting too cold up here in Maine to be out fiddling with the winter beater.

Sure would appreciate some advice!

Re: Help! starts right up, dies right down 200 84

Funny you should mention this problem. I replaced my AMM about a year ago when it exhibited the same symptoms. Unfortunately I reconnected that hot air duct to the exhaust manifold without checking to see that the temperature controled valve in the air cleaner assembly was working properly. It only feeds hot air off the exhaust manifold during start up. After that it supposed to draw fresh air from the front of the car. When this thing fails, it defaults to drawing in the hot air source. End result is that your AMM overheats and burns out. A new AMM costs $560 and the rebuilds are about $300 to #350 but are not terribly reliable. Try one from a Pick and Pull and just make sure that air cleaner control valve is working or disconnect the hot air hose.

Good luck!

Dean

I agree with both of them. I had a similar problem. I replaced temperature sensors, oxygen sensor, etc. It didn't go away till I replaced the mass air flow meter, and a new air duct that leads onto, out of it. THe older ones had cracks at the bottom. YOu might want to check yours,

From my experience, sounds like an air mass meter. We have had 84s that seem to love eating them every so ofter, and symptoms are essentially the same.

What does the air mass meter do? Is it related to the oxygen sensor? It it smart to replace on upon getting a used air mass meter?
