240 headlight switches... 200 1985

Am I the only one that has problems with these light switches?

Now I know it's not in the same league with relays, but I've bought new from Volvo and within a couple years they start having contact resistance problems.....and the used ones were beyond toast.

I guess the pretty new (2.5 years) one in the 245 needs to come out for a cleaning.

    Multiple choice answer:

    a) Up to at least '85 there were no headlight relays in the 240 so full current went through the switch

    b) Adding high output headlights and other non-OEM lighting draws more current through the switch

    c) The connector on the back of the switch constantly moves a miniscule amount over time due to vibration and expansion/contraction eventually leading to a point of high resistance

    d) You are cursed

    e) All of the above :)

These things are repairable and rebuildable with a little patience. A coworker came to me with a handful of parts once. It seems that his wife had tried to turn the lights off by pushing on the switch. Squirted all the guts out the back.

After spreading the pile of stuff out we went back and found the rest of the springs and balls, and put the nasty little thing back together. The crimped tabs that hold it all together loosen up sometimes, and the switch gets really fritzy.

Our cars never have fritzy stuff. Right.

One of the pcs I use forgot all about it. Doesn't even say "Hi MittenHed" any more. The other dozen or so remember just fine. Same technology as is used in light switches???

Maybe you should not lube them with Amsoil.

i have a 1980 240 (bought new) that is approaching 400K. Tomorrow I will install the fourth headlight switch. They seem to last about 6 years. Good luck. Theron
