Removal of Auto Shift Knob 200 1988

I'll be replacing the shifter cover on my '88 240, and will therefore need to remove the shift knob. I can find no obvious way that the knob or shift lever comes apart. Has anyone done this?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Removal of Auto Shift Knob 200 1988

Look at the seam in the back of the chrome shaft and separate and remove it carefully. Now, put a baggy over the knob to contain flying parts. Put a crescent wrench under the knob and pound up, tapping it with a hammer. The knob will pop off.

Worked perfectly. Had the job done in about 15 minutes.

Thanks.
