'80 242 GT for $600 - am I crazy if I don't buy it? 200 80

The car in question is solid, drives very well, good clutch, strong quiet engine, OD works, interior is not torn to shreds (not perfect, but no rips)

and supposedly only 120K miles on the car. Has 5 turbo alloys in good shape (1 spare!) no center caps.

On the downside, the body, while basically intact and solid, has some small dents and some rust, definite cancer on the rear quarter panels. I also found some light green goo on the inside of the oil filler cap(!), doesn't look like condensation OR coolant, no water showing on the dipstick.

I think it's worth the $600; does anyone think it might be worth more? I already have a 245, don't need a second car, but what a great project car this would be! Just thought I'd air my thoughts, I can't seem to decide on what to do...

I'd say that you are, I paid about $2000 cdn for my 1980 GT some may say that I'm crazy. It is in great shape. I'd jump on one for $600.

Re: '80 242 GT for $600 - am I crazy if I don't buy it? 200 1980 GT

Nice car, Max! This one's not quite as nice, did I mention flaky repainting job? I've decided not to get it, and to put the money into my existing ride in order to make it faster/better. Lord knows $600 can easily disappear in that direction, too.

I thought the GT drove nicely, tho. It had a different feel from my '86, like the whole drivetrain was more solidly built. And the fact that I'm stuck with an auto trans makes me want to cry. And then I start thinking, $300 for the M46, $200 for the 15" alloys and I'm nearly at $600 anyway! Hmmm...

Re: '80 242 GT for $600 - am I crazy if I don't buy it? 200 80

I bought my 1980 242GT for $250. It has some surface rust due to years of exposure to the San Diego sun. No body rust. One small dent on the passengers side rear quarter panel. Had a lot of new parts. Only needed a caliper bolt, 2 hardlines and new brake fluid (I replaced the entire front brake system save a few hardlines and the vacuum assist) to get it on the road. It has 213,XXX miles with a head rebuild within the last 10,000 miles. Interior is faded but otherwise in great condition. I would try to get the price cut in half. If you are willing to do most of the work yourself and shop around for good parts at great prices then I would go for it. The only area that is going to be very expensive is the body. Make sure you know where the rust is.

Best Regards,

David Russell

I'm looking for a Good, turbo engine from a 78 to 81 ( 242 ). I'm in the mid west and have been looking for awhile.

"...a Good, turbo engine from a 78 to 81..."

Reconsider, and look for a good turbo engine from an '81 to an '85.

"...have been looking for awhile..."

Yes, and if you ask for a '78 to '80 turbo engine, you'll be looking for a long, long while. '81 was the first year for the turbo in the 240.

I own a 1980 242GT, paid much more, it's been worth every penny. Snatch it up while you can, otherwise...I am in the market to buy another.

Geez, I paid $3500 for my '84 244 Ti not four months ago. I love it though, and a thing's value is what someone will pay for it.

Wish I could have found it for $1000 though....

Re: '80 242 GT for $600 - am I crazy if I don't buy it? 200 80

I used to own an 80 GT- parted it out to fix up my '79 (until a deer ended its life in 1999). One major drawback of the '80 is that you are basically getting a NA 240 with nice alloy wheels and a corduroy interior. This car will be missing the suspension parts (r sport springs & heavier roll bars) that made the '79 GT (and to some extent the '78) one of the most desirable 240s from a OEM performance standpoint. Also has those ugly wheel wells which are prone to severe rust out. Also, almost every GT I've seen in this price range is severely rusted or has had significant body work. Check the car very carefully for rust- you could possibly be looking at several thousand dollars in bodywork.

Re: '80 242 GT for $600 - am I crazy if I don't buy it? 200 80

Vytas -- it seems to me you answered your own question: You don't need it, but it would be a great project. If you have enough space in your life that you can devote the time to this, you've got the resources to not only buy it but insure it, inspect it, and spend probably twice what you paid for it on getting it in great shape, then go for it. Heck -- many people spend $1800 with one family trip to Disneyworld. Spending that much over 18 months or so on a rewarding project car seems like good value...if you've got the time, money, and space. But...before you do, can you pull up the carpets just to check *for sure* about the rust situation?
