Dome Light not right! 900 1992

For some bizarre reason the dome light on my 1992 940GL does not function properly. There are 3 settings: On, Off, On when any door is open. The dome light turns off and on manually. However, if set to function when any door is open it will not turn off. I have replaced all four door switches and the light will still not turn off. One other ironic thing is that the two map lights in the dome light unit function properly in all 3 settings. Is there some fuse or re-set that I am overlooking? Any assistance is appreciated.

Re: Dome Light not right! 900 1992

Hi Tim,

I am suffering from the same thing. I just recently purchased (3 weeks ago) a 93 940 with only 77,000 miles and when I open the doors the front map lights go on but the dome light does not come on. If I switch the dome light on manually it works fine. I figure when I do the next service I'll have the dealership check on it for me.

Thanks!

Lu S.

Re: Dome Light not right! 900 1992

I do not know about the 92's, but on the 95's there is a timer on the light. when a door is closed, the light stays on for about 8 seconds. you might want to check if you have a timer and if so, is it working.

Re: Dome Light not right! 900 1992

That 3rd setting, for control by the doors, runs on a 15 second timer. The main light will NOT go out immediately after closing the doors as the map lights do. They should have added the feature that Ford has, where during timed operation, it turns off immediately upon turning the ignition on.

This is common for high-end Euro cars. I recently rented a Citröen in Italy that did the same thing.

Re: Dome Light not right! 900 1992

Ok, my 93 940 does the same thing with a slight twist: the dome light sometimes times out just like it should, other times it won't go out, and still one other mode of quirkiness: light dims, dims some more and almost goes out then BINGO! Full Brightness. I gave up and just run the small lights (map lights I guess is the right term). I always wondered whether these lights run off some sort of solid state timer and perhaps mine is shot. Where do I find this timer, relay, (troublemaker) whatever, in the car?

Thanks

Steve

Re: Dome Light not right! 900 1992

The timer circuit is built in to the dome light assembly. Only fix I know of is replacement.

Re: Dome Light not right! 900 1992

is there any way to take apart the dome light and disable the timing circut (may take some rewiring)?
