Tranmission Control 900 1991

I've got another about my 91 940SE Wagon. I new to Volvo's so I have a lot to learn. I just noticed that on later models of 940's there was 3 buttons marked W,S,E beside the gear shifter. I'm pretty sure this controls the tranmission in Economy, Sport, and one more which I can't think of. Could someone explain these functions to me. And now for the big question could I install this option in my 940SE?? I have the cut out beside the shifter for these switches but it just has a filler plate installed. Would I need some sort of module that controls the tranmission? Would it be worth it? Will it improve my gas consumption when I desire and/or improve performance when desired??

Thanks,

Joe

    Re: Tranmission Control 900 1991

The electronically controlled automatic (AW30-40/43LE) with W/S/E mode selector was only used with the new engine series in the 960, never in the 940 which used the conventional mechanic AW70/71/72 tranny (or ZF4HP22 on some markets). Unfortunately this upgrade would be (almost) impossible.

Your right about the E and S, the W is for winter mode which has the car start out in 3rd gear to minimize wheel slippage. As far upgrading your car I wouldn't know. I would say the transmission, computer need to be change for that upgrade, just guessing here.
