Wheel & Tire Packages 200 89

The older older bro needs winter tires.

He's thinking of buying one of those tire/wheel packages from a mail order place like www.tirerack.com .

I was wondering whether or not the wheels that come with those packages are up to snuff. We don't want to end up with four wheels that resemble 'special spares'.

Thanks for any replys, jokes, insults, etc...

They're fine (I have two sets from Tire Rack.) One nice feature of the set is that they come pre-mounted and balanced with stems, ready to install.

    Re: Wheel & Tire Packages 200 89

Just purchased a wheel/tire package for my 89 240DL wagon last month. I bought the new Blizzaks WS-50's (205/70-14's) with new steel wheels. I had the opportunity to use them last weekend in northern Wisconsin on ice&snow packed roads. Words cannot describe how these tires work on solid ice and snow! It's like having ABS, Traction Control, studs, and chains all in one. They're the best! No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the wagon to skid, spin, or even do donuts!I purchased them from the Tire Rack from my son Aaron. Give him a call at 1-800-428-8355 ext 395 and tell him I say "hi and thanks for the tire package."

Is 205/70-14 really the best size for me to get

a winter tire package (for my 91 240 wagon)? TireRack

thinks so, but it sounds big to me. I thought 185/70

was more like it. Also the Rack price for Blizzak-WS50s

is $68. Is that an OK price? The package with rims,

covers and shipping (to my location) is $605.

The 185/70-14 tire for your wagon is way too small to handle the weight of that vehicle, especially as a snow tire. The correct size for the gvw of that wagon is a 205/70-14. Volvo initially used a small tire on that wagon, but that does not mean they were right. That wagon on 185's doesn't handle safely in dry conditions, let alone snow and ice. If you have ever driven a 240 with 205's on it, there is a night and day difference in handling and load capacity. The TR add displays the 2 series Volvos with 14" new steel wheels, WS-50 Blizzaks and wheel covers for $454. I'm not sure of the size they advertise, but even if were a 185, to upgrade to a 205 would increase the package only $6.00 per tire, totaling the package to $478. Then you need to add shipping. Did you talk to my son, Aaron? He's at ext 395. Give

him a call. I have an extensive knowledge of tires and suspensions but he's the best I know and I trust him.

        Rob,

I wouldn't go with 205/70-14 for snow tires, they are too wide. If you were going for performance tires, that would be a good size.

For snows, you want tall, narrow tires. The original size for the 240 wagon is 185-14 (no aspect ratio, approximately equivalent to 185/82-14). There are not many tires available in that size. 195/75-14 is a good replacement. 185/75-14 is close, but the speedometer will read a bit low.

I just go to the nearest u-pull-it and buy the steel wheels at $6 each. Then I cover them with $13 a set ABS wheel covers from Wal-Mart. (Same designs for which mail order places charge $25 EACH!)

    Do the math

I have and still do buy tires from the Rack

Usually the wheels are oem from the same people that the manufacturer uses. That's been my experience, if in doubt ask!
