Looking at '85 740 T 700 1990

I've got my eye on a 1985 740 turbo with 238 km on it. Automatic. Cosmeticly perfect. What are the major things to look for? I drove it last night and it stalled on me just minutes after starting when I stomped on the gas pedal, and then on the highway at speed the engine seemed to quit for a split second (or two) and then start up again. Odd, I thought.

Anyways, the vehicle is in exceptional condition and I'm salivating, I just don't want to blow it with a high-mileage turbo. (no pun intended)

Ken 1990 745 m47 100kms + '85 turbo?

Sounds like the stall and hesitation could be caused from a bad fuel pump or a bad intank fuel line. Was the tank full when you drove it? If less then half its probably the fuel line. Check the records and see what work has been done. Car could need some work if not maintained. May be a good deal if you can get it cheap enough and have the experience and money to make repairs.

Ask or find out answers for these questions:

    1. Any engine rebuild in the past?

    2. Transmission work?

    3. Check condition of headliner. (The foam layer in my '85 760 crumbled and become powdery in southern California condition. The PO had it garaged and it had less than 50k miles in 1998 when I bought it.)

    4. Wiring harness. (I ended up replacing once for an '83 240 and once for an '85 760. Both were in bad shape.) The experience that you had was probably due to grounding/deteriorating of the wiring harness insulations.

In general, check the repair records carefully. If no records, then you are on your own and good luck to you. At the very least do a compression test.

Thanks...forgot to mention...compression 160, 155, 155, 160. Headliner has been replaced. Top end is a little noisey though...
