Front-end moanin' 200 80

Hi, All. Anyone have thoughts on this one? I hear a sound that seems to be coming from the rt. (pass. side) front wheel, at speeds of 40mph and up. It is a low, constant humming. Reminds me of "Bad bearing", except that when rounding a curve to the *left* the sound goes away. When going straight, or curving right (particularly the latter) the sound is evident. (My understanding is that it's "bearings" if the sound is louder on a given side when that side experiences more weight/load.) I sure hope this post makes sense! Any ideas/advice? TIA

Is your car pulling to the right? If so, you may have a sticking piston in the brake calliper.

Re: Front-end moanin' 200 80

Hi, Ryan. Well, in fact, the car *has* tended to pull right, but for a long time now (before I noticed any unusual sounds). It is a *slight* pull. I never notice a temperature difference between the two front rotors, and also the wheel spins freely when jacked up.

Re: Front-end moanin' 200 80

If you're wheel is spinning freely, I doubt that your bearings are bad. Make sure that the wheel has no play in it either. It should be very solid.

I've got some weird thing going on in my right front as well. I've got a weird knocking noise that happens for the first few feet of travel, and then goes away. Sometimes is accompanied by a noise, and some knocking over bumps. I've eliminated tie-rod end (play in wheel, knocking over bumps, loose steering) by having it replaced. Bearings are good.

Keep in mind that if you have a caliper piston that is just ever so sticking, it will cause some pulling. Also, if you have bad front bushings, it will also cause some pulling, along with some creaking and all sorts of other things.

If anyone has any idea about the noises I'm having, please let me know. My steering is tight, just had tie rod end replaced. Still having some weird knocking noises though at initial driving, then they go away. Anyway, hopes this helps.

Sure sounds like your front wheel bearings are on their way out...Replace.

Re: Front-end moanin' 200 80

Thank you, Michael, but.....In my little bit of experience, and from what I always hear, the bad bearing should get louder when the load on it is increased.....IOW, if it were a bad bearing, wouldn't it get louder on the right if I were rounding a curve to the left? My situation seems opposite--a curve to the left "cures" the hum.
