Alternator 200 1982

Hello

Where should the ground wire be attached to the alternator? Currently there is a ground attached to the alternator belt tensioner bolt. This does not look right. I also noticed that the ground strap for the engine is broken. What problems could this cause?

William

Re: Alternator 200 1982

On the alternator the ground can go under any big case bolts. Sounds like someone replaced it wrong. Your engine needs a good ground to the frame as well as the alternator. A poor frame ground can cause all sorts of problems such as all engine elctricals can have intermittant problems. And theoretically cause problems with the iron block and alumninum head, galvanic corrision even with good antifreeze.

Re: Alternator 200 1982

William: It would cause a lower than normal charge rate in that the ground path is more circuitous. My wife's '92 940 GL kept running down the battery due to this condition. A better ground strap from the alternator directly to the block cured it. i rmn & etc.. Jim A.
