IT Passed Emissions!!!!!!! 200 1982

Well I did it, finally!!! The list of what it took.

Replaced the thermostat, air filter, cleaned throttle body, cleaned and replaced flame trap plumbing, replaced fuel lines on fuel rail, replaced injector seals, put on another Cat-used aftermarket ,new intake gasket, and turned the timing down to around 8 degrees. And yesterday I'm legal. The only thing that really made a difference was the injector seals, the car idles very well now, big improvement on accelration too. So I'm guessing that was the trouble all along. Timing is back to 12, it runs better there, although something I'm not sure of, what would cause the timing mark to bounce around, it varies about 2 degrees back and forth.

Here's the passing readings:

Gas Standard Reading

NOx 1273 1153 PASS

HC 167 20 PASS

CO 1.57 .09 PASS

CO2 14.8

02 .6

RPM 45mph

So my brick is good for another 2 years, YAHOO!!!

Thanks for all the info and assistance, before this I had no idea what NOx

even was.

Thanks again!!!

Chuck...

Re: IT Passed Emissions!!!!!!! 200 1982

Chuck -- Congratulations! I know you've been chasing this one down for a long time. Eavesdropping on your problems and the advice which has been submitted has been helpful to me as well. My 'new' '87 244 has NOx readings similar to your passing ones. It's significantly higher than on my '81 and '83. In Penna., we need to pass every year, and with this car, I need to have it passed in February again after having it checked to title it in October. I hope I get passed in Feb., because that's a miserable time to be out in the street working on the car. Injector seals, huh...?

Re: IT Passed Emissions!!!!!!! 200 1982

Congrats on passing the new stringent NJ regs. I just passed with my

84 turbo on Monday in NJ also. If your timing belt is loose I think

that could let your timing move a couple of degrees like that. If you

havent' reset the tension it only take a few minutes. You do need a torque

wrench but all you do is pop off the rubber plug on the timing cover.

The older cars use a 17mm nut. Loosen the nut one complete turn. Now,

retorque the nut to 37 ft lbs. If its not this then I would second the

suggestion that the dist may have worn bushings.

    Spark scatter 200 1982

Usually caused by worn distributor. Two degrees isn't bad at all. When it gets to around four, I'd replace the distributor, but first have the distributor checked on a distributor machine. Sometimes it's just a worn distributor (or worse, cam) gear.

If you have points on your 82 consider replacing them with a perlux or other point eliminator system that bolts on in place of the points and uses either a hall pickup on the stock point cam or a drop-in reluctor wheel, some of them even use an led optical setup. The advantage of the point eliminator is that it eliminates side loads on the distributor shaft from the points and can markedly reduce spark scatter, not to mention eliminate point wearout.

      Re: Spark scatter 200 1982

Thanks for the info. My car has the dreaded Chrysler ignition system. So I guess distributor wear could be the culprit. I've heard of the Hall effect sensor, would this failing play a part in this??

It takes the place of the points in a conventional system?

      Thanks...

      Chuck.

        Re: Spark scatter 200 1982

no points in your Chrysler distributor afaik, so it's likely just bushing wear...these things aren't ball bearings. Failure of the Hall sensor is electronic, not mechanical, and wouldn't likely affect spark timing. They generally work or not.

If it bothers you enough (around 4 degrees is my limit) just pop the distributor and have it checked. Two degrees is what, double the thickness of the timing mark on the flywheel anyway, so it's not real bad.

Re: IT Passed Emissions!!!!!!! 200 1982

It is good to know about the injector seals. My emissions have been very low but the seals are 14 years old and the car has 255Kmiles on it right now. It might be time for some more preventative maintenance.
