Clutch and others 700 88

Hey people, me again!

I am thinking of chaging my clutch and universal joints in my 740 non turbo, how hard is it to change it yourself? Does anyone think that the center bearing would need replacing? i am starting to hear clunking from the tail shaft, when reversing, etc, and really hoping that it is the universals.......it should be, right? *crossing fingers*. How heavy is the gearbox? I mean, i'd prefer not to be squashed under the car if i can avoid it...... Any way, any input would be GREAT!

p.s. i wanna do it myself, because i have been quoted $450 aussie dollars for JUST the labour! Clutch itself was something like $280 aussies ones

If it is like a 240, it is not too hard and well worth learning. The only tricky part is those "impossible to reach" top 19 mm bolts in the bell housing. You need 2 to 3 feet of extensions and try a couple of approaches to the bolts. It gets quite easy with practice. The other thing is twisting and turning the tranny to get the clutch cable tunnel to clear on the way out and back in. And you want to have the rear main seal, pilot bearing and clutch kit ready to go while you are in there. Lifting it back in will require a couple of helpers. On the way out, I use Steve S's method of pulling it onto my chest and knees (75-100 lbs, not bad) and sliding out from under it. On the way in, use a jack or two to help.

Actually, It's considerably easier on the 700's. Those top two bolts can be undone with an ordinary wrench but you have to undo them before you drop the transmission mount. You only have enough clearance when the engine is in the right (normal) position. Also you may find it easier to remove the distributor so that you can lower the transmission much further (ie: camshaft cover touching the firewall). Once you lower the tranny, all the other bolts are easy access, then remove the tranny. It is quite heavy but you can bear the weight on your chest (wear a heavy sweater or jacket so it doesn't hurt.) I would also suggest replacing the rear main seal while you're in there.
