THROWOUT BEARING SPINS CONSTANTLY 200 83

Dear Brickboard reader:

Should the throwout bearing always be in contact with the rotating pressure plate fingers? My old chevy had a spring underneath the car to pull the bearing away from the clutch, the Volvo doesn't and is spinnig (and squeaking) all the time.

If it's squeaking, it's dead. Replace it.

I have a spring on mine, though I doubt that it is factory. Any spring will do. Mine is hooked from the fork to the mounting plate. I'm not sure if it is always supposed to be in contact because when I think about the hydraulic clutches, I think the contact is constant.

If there is a stop other than a cruise control switch to limit upwards travel of the clutch pedal, it should have a return spring. It would run from the hole in the end of the fork to a hole in the metal trans mount plate. Sometime in the early 80's Volvo got the bright idea to remove the stop and the spring and have the bearing in contact all the time. Stupid, I would say. If the noise is just a chirping that goes away when you put some pressure on the pedal, you can live with it for awhile. If it gets worse when loaded, change it before you chew up the fork or something more expensive. You will probably find its about time for the rest of the clutch, as the bearings usually last as long as the disc.

If you do not have a stop, one can be easily added with a bolt and two nuts and a rubber cap to keep the car sounding luxurious. At least on the 700's
