Which coil is the best? 120-130

Hello,

Just wondering which coil is a better choice for my 122. I was working last night on the 122 and noticed that the spark is inconsistant. Seems like the coil is shot. I did get it off the shelf in the garage labled "questionable," because I was in a hurry. Is this a logical thought? The plugs and wires are slightly used in another car, and the rotor and cap are new. Battery is taking a beating with testing and what not, but still good.

It has a Crane XR3000 electric unit. I've read somewhere that blue coil = points, condensor and red coil = electric ignition. Is this true? What about other brands than Bosch? I've seen plenty of others around. Some claim to be able to light up small towns or sporting events...

Thanks

    Ummm...

In my experience, an erratic or inconsistent spark is something in the distributor. The coil either works right, causes a weak spark, or doesn't work at all. The one exception to that might be if it works for a while, heats up, becomes intermittent, and then stops working. But the coil is an amazingly simple and robust part compared to all the fiddly, moving, flopping and wearing parts in a distributor. So while checking (swapping for known good) coils isn't a bad idea, try the dizzy, too!

Personally, I'm running a blue coil with the Allison (now Crane) ignition unit, with no problems. But I've also heard that this isn't the 'best' setup....

I agree. All the Volvos I've had have been through multiple

ignition switches and distributors but have the original coil.

I have seen ONE 144 with a bad coil but it sat with the switch

turned on for several days and I think it got overheated and

      damaged its insulation.

Uhh... I have never used to blue coil, but heard good things about it.

But I both my cars use the red coil and both use points, and the cars run really nice.

When I suspected that the coil in my 122 was dead, I went to a salvage

yard and got a coil from a random car (it was a 6 cylinder 2 door BMW)

and wired it up to the battery directly (and then wired it up to the

distributor). The car worked fine. This probably isn't as well engineered

as bosche wanted, but it certainly worked well enough to make the car go.

I'd just wire up an old distributor you've got sitting around to a relay

connected to the ignition switch; use a starter button instead of the

key breaking mechanism volvo designed, and ignore the armored coil in the

    122. I used a bolt hole from the bracket holding the (dead) brake booster.

I am already using a regular coil. I just ran a wire from the term. 15 on the "new" coil to the same one that the armored wire connected to on the switch, through a hole in a plate I put over the original coil location on the firewall. I had to do this because the fuel injection and Crane box both needed power from the coil, and I didn't feel like monkeying with diodes and all that stuff.
