starter motor 200 88

I don't know why my starter motor keeps running, smoking after the engine cranks up. The battery signal light on the dashboard is on sort of fadedly.

Help!!!!!

    Yes, what MittenHed said.

I had this happen to my '82 244. If you run the car with the starter engaged, you'll strip the gear on the starter. I replaced it, same problem. Replaced the wiring harness, problem disappeared. My harness was shot, but if I remember correctly, your '88 shouldn't have that problem. I'd check that anyways.

Could it be a problem with the ignition switch???

      Re: starter motor 200 88

Thanks, guys. On the back of my starter motor, there are four connection points- two bolt-nut-things, and two electric clip looking things-, but there are only three wires- two big wires with holes and a small wire with a clip. Could it be the problem? I had marked every single wire before I took them off the starter, and I'm pretty sure I put them back right.

      More feedback please?

      Thanks

        Hi Brian,

That sounds A-OK to me. One big wire comes from the battery, the other goes to the alternator. Both are red on my car. The small wire goes with the larger wire to a clip on the alternator.

Avoid driving while this is going on. It can cause needless damage.

Pull the starter off and see if the drive gear is stuck in the engage position. You may be able to free it up as a band-aid, or it may be rebuild time. If it is origional a clean and lube could be in order. Check the bearings etc.

Trade it in and bolt on one someone else has rebuilt. The options are many, but do not run the car if the starter does not disengage.
