Gas Smell and other questions 200 1983

Hmmm, I've been noticing a gas smell while driving in my wagon. I don't think it's coming from the vents because I blasted them in HIGH setting and sniffed the air coming in from them--smells fine. I'm not too sure, but the gas smell seems to correlate with me driving with driver-side window down. So that may mean the smell is coming from outside. Anyone have any ideas. Am I running too rich? Sometimes my rpm is at 2 when in PARK, but at 1 when in DRIVE with brake depressed.

By the way, what are the rpm ratings at different speeds. Can you diagnosed an OD problem by looking at the rpm gauge while driving at certain speeds? Thanks.

There is a vacuum hose from the charcoal canister (under the front, left fender) that traces up to the throttle body. When it breaks, you cna get the fuel smell.

Also, trace the fuel supply and return lines under the ar. Look for "gooey"-ness of the undercoating. gasoline dissolves it, making it gooey. Indicates a rusted hard line.

When I had this problem, it was because of a bad deal of the

gas filler cap. You can replace it for a couple of bucks. I had

one of those key storage caps that didn't seal well.

Your fuel filter is on the drivers side. If is smells like raw gas you could be leaking at a hose or something. If it is a rich running smell then I would guess your oxegen sensor but you should get a check engine light on the dash.
