Car started this morning and... 700 90

Started my 1990 740 GLE/16 Valve this morning and went to the Post Office before going to work this morning. I went inside for about 3 minutes and came back outside and jumped in my car.

It cranked but, would not turn over. Now this has my full attention. I am thinking AMM but, no indication car was running smoothly; timing belt --oh, s*** interference engine. I don't want to crank it again. I am now afraid. What to do? I smoke 3 cigarettes trying to make up my mind. I call in to work and say I am not going to make it. Smoke another cigarette.

I call AAA. One hour has elapsed since I got into my car. I try to start car again and it starts and dies. I sit for a minute and try again it starts and runs longer and dies. I wait another minute it starts and stays running.

I drive home and now I am podering what is wrong with my baby? I can not decide if it was a fluke or Do I have bad spark plugs, wires, rotor, or distributor?

If it was raining the most likely culprit is the distributor cap. Replace cap and rotor.

I'm not familiar with the 16 valve engines. However, having said that... the next time it won't start watch the tach while you are cranking it over. The b230f engine's flywheel sensor will cause the tach to jump repeatedly slightly off of home position while cranking. When it doesn't we immediately replace the sensor and go back to work. If your car is set up with a flywheel sensor (and I assume it is) it would be worth checking out. The sensor is located at the very top of the bell housing, see if you have one.
