HELP!! CAR WON'T START!! 900 1993

I started my 1993 960 this morning and it stalled 3 seconds after and now will not start at all. I can smell gas, so it is getting fuel. What else can I do short of towing to a mechanic? Your help is much appreciated. Oh, by the way, I do not have a manual...yet.

    What Happened?? 900 1993

Inquiring minds would like to know...

Believe it or not it turned out to be out of gas. The gauge, which has always worked properly, registered 1/4 tank full. I removed the gas cap, shook the car and heard nothing. I added 2 gallons and after a couple of tries the engine began to respond. It took several tries, but the engine started and is running fine. Apparently, the gauge is now unreliable. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Thank God it turned out to be something simple. Now I will get myself a service manual.

Yikes, and at $1.60+ a gallon, that was a pretty easy fix. There's a saying in medicine: When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras!

See Abe Crombie's post on No Starts in AWD/FWD 900 1993

He has posted some good advice there that also applies to the 960 engines. BTW my wife's '88 BMW always protests the next start when she just moves the car in the yard and then shuts it off cold. (Her car doesn't have hydraulic lifter either, its probably just plug moisture and carbon.)

    Re: HELP!! CAR WON'T START!! 900 1993

Is the gas smell from the engine compartment or the tail pipe and how strong is it? About the only sensor that can cause a no start condition is the crankshaft sensor. (The ECM can substitute workable values for most of the other sensors.)

If the smell is from the tail pipe mostly, perhaps an injector has stuck and flooded the engine. Holding the throttle wide open may help in that case.

If the smell is from the engine compartment, find the leak and fix it before trying other stuff before you have a fire!

Good luck and keep us posted.

You smell gas? Where from? I am not familiar with the 6 but on the fours, there is a fuel pressure regulator which, when the diaphram inside fails, pours gas into the intake manifold. Check it out.

    Timing Belt? 900 1993

When did you change it last?

    •   REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE    PRINT   SAVE

960 is an interference engine, timing belt would be obvious! NOISE! 900 1993

There would have been some very loud bangs if the belt on a 960 broke.
