Disconnecting lowest speed on blower fan? 200 1981

Is it possible to disconnect the lowest speed only on the blower fan? Mine runs all of the time (switch goes from 1 to 4), and has blown smoke at me once (only for a few seconds). I was thinking I could get the AC switch out of a late model 240 and connect the low fan speed setting through this (normally fan wouldn't run, but if switch was flicked, it would run). I read somewhere that the fan uses a resistor. Does this make it more difficult? Thank you.

Re: Disconnecting lowest speed on blower fan? 200 1982

Dave,

Why not just replace the switch with a newer model one that has

the 4 speeds plus an off position. I had an 82' that I changed over

for the same reason. A couple of The wires in the switch socket have to be changed, but otherwise , it's a fairly simple swap. At least then

you still have the low speed if you want it.

David --

According to the schematic below, disconnecting the black wire (color code="SB") will remove motor power when the switch is in the "1" position. This will also disable the fan when the AC turns and the switch is in the lowest position.

There is a high power resistor which drops all the battery power not used by the blower in the lower speed positions. At lowest speed it will get quit hot and may be burning off some dust or even leaves. If you get a plastic smell the resistor may be loose and is touching the plastic heater case.

The blower is designed to run all the time to keep the ventilation system free of moisture and prevent mold and bacteria growth.

I would like to disconnect the lowest speed so as to increase the life of the motor/bearings etc. The car is garaged, and the weather is warm, so I am not overly concerned about moisture buildup, etc.

Probably the best way is to disconnect the wire for position 1 on the back of the fan switch. This is not easy, the wires on the switch are in a socket. The contact must be removed from the socket with a jewelers screwdriver by depressing a tab on the contact. To access the switch, the plastic panel for the center console must be partially removed. Its brittle and cracks easily.

Also, a clarification, the fan runs all the time when the ignition switch is in the run position. The fan does not run when the ignition is off.
