Deer-1 Volvo-0 200 81

Hi.

Just got a call from my wife who hit a deer while driving home tonite in my 81 242. She`s OK( that`s why we drive Volvos) but sounds like my pretty nice 242 is crunched in the front end. Just got it out of the body shop last week after a guy backed into me, very frustrating!!! Anyway, the point of this is to remind all of you who live in deer country that it is that time of year again so BE CAREFUL! However, sometimes that just isn`t enough.

Regards,

Rich

    My $.02-

When crash is imminent, accelerate as high as possible. This will raise front end and the deer most probably will go under the car. Braking the car brings the front down resulting in the deer going up over the hood and thru the windshield. Learned this from a Kentuckian.

This is a bumper crop for deer this year, apparently all over. I recently counted 20 carcasses in a variety of wholeness along South I77 that connects Washington PA (I70) and Morgantown WV (I68). They say that if you have one in your headlights and it looks like it's gonna hit, just hit the damn thing head on. Most accidents escalate if you try to avoid them (like hitting other cars)

I can vouch for it being better hitting one head on. I hit a deer in a new rented Taurus two years ago; you know, the new jelly bean shape with the lousy headlights and ten foot larger turning circle than a 240. Anyway, in the split second I had to decide whether to try and avoid it and possibly losing control or hit it head on I decided the latter and sloughed off speed as quickly as I could and ran right in to it. Then the airbags deployed, or exploded into the cabin would better describe it, making me think I then had an electrical fire. The deer went right over the top of the car. The car was trashed. Horrendous! Then the rental company who I shall not name tried to bill me an "estimated loss of use" in addition to what my insurance paid. Overall I am glad I wasn't in my own 245 despite the additional "trauma" (might be a bit too strong a word) that I would probably have avoided.

    Re: Deer-1 Volvo-0 (Deer Safety) 200 81

Well, there are deer all over the place here in upstate NY. I hit one two summers ago on I-88 just east of Oneonta, NY while doing about 70 mph and marveling over the brightness of my 1 day old 7" Hellas. Deer jumped right off a bank as I was passing by- never saw it (even though I could see over a mile down the road in front of me). Needless to say, there were no winners in that one- killed both the deer and a perfectly good '79 GT. Deer 1, Volvo 1.

The only tips I have for driving at night in deer country are:

    1) drive slowly- do not outdrive your lights! You won't get there any faster if you wack a deer on the way.

    2) install good lights with a good wide angle beam- most good quality fogs can be aimed to provide excellent side lighting- helps a great deal in detecting deer before they attack your car. I use mine even when using my main beam for this purpose.

    3) Practice looking for deer while you're driving- those buggers can be hard to see, especially in the flat light conditions of fall and winter when they blend in with the trees and brush.

    4) Support deer hunting in your state.

    5) In my experience, deer whistles do not work- don't rely on them to keep deer away from your vehicle. In some cases, they may do more harm than good, as they give people a false sense of security.

No one likes deer hunting by car. Be safe!

    Hey Rich!

Not to pry or anything but WHERE ARE YOU??

I am noticing that it is nothing rare to see deer around here

in NE Oklahoma now. When I was a kid (50 years ago) they were

most uncommon. I guess that lifestyles and prosperity have

made it a lot more healthy for them. They are talking about

    overpopulation here.

Deer all over the place here in Maine. Like squirrels or mice, but they make a bigger clunk.

I recomend deer whistles on the front bumper. And two or three trolls hanging from the mirror.

My coworker Bobo recomends prayer, but I think he may have been praying for meat.

My parents live in western Penna, which is pretty mountainous and rural -- tons of deer around. After hitting several deer, my father finally got a set of these deer whistles. He says the darn things are a nuisance because they keep getting clogged with deer hair...

If you use the deer whistles, it's really important to mount them correctly. If you put them on facing backwards, deer will actually chase your car.

Haven't hit one since I put the whistles on. Didn't hit one before, either. Prevention? That's what the lucky troll dolls are for.

I agree with your Dad. Not to mention the 8 point buck I drove right on by who didn't seem at all concerned about the deer whistles I had mounted on my car. Must have been a deaf deer- they seem to be very common around here- lots of people with deer whistles comment on the frequency with which they encounter them...

Jumping back to an earlier thread: if you're in Maine, where is this magical independent imports store that carries such goodies as mann filters? thanks.

Pierce's on Route 4 north of Turner. Foreign Autopart on Riverside in Portland. Foreign Auto Supply, Rt1 in Brunswick. Imported Car Parts on Cove Street in Portland.

I have done business with all these stores over the last 25 years or so, but if you aren't in the southern part of the state, I have no local knowledge to offer.

            Re: Deer-1 Volvo-0 200 81

We usually try to hunt deer with high powered rifles here in Texas, but I have talked to a couple of guys that swear it's easier to just run 'em down. The trick is to use a big pickup with a good brush gaurd and just toss 'em in the bed.

Don't try this with a Volvo.

I agree with the whistle AND being carefull.

Maybe something like this would help the Volvo with deer hunting:

              Gotta protect the front end!
