What's A Decent '89 Wagon Worth? 200 89

This 89 wagon I test drove felt pretty solid as far as suspension and steering. The body's good too, and it only has 96K miles on it. But the used car dealer wants $6200!

I was thinking of offering $4500, but is that even too much for a car with the following shortcomings?:

Exhaust system ready to rust out/ Front tires unevenly worn/ Interior leather has a few splits and tears, and the side pockets are destroyed/ Has trailer hitch-who knows what they pulled?/ Fails jiggle test-flame trap hose split and looks like it wasn't touched in years/ Condensation in headlight lenses, some cracks in taillight lenses

Otherwise, it's a pretty nice car!

Screw the fact that the car has 96K. Without some records to prove that mileage, assume that it has 200K. Instrument clusters are a 10 minute swap.

I have not read the other predictions, but I saw a 87 wagon on a lot this summer. 98K, perfect interior, minor fading on the exterior, but no dings or scratches. I did not drive the car, it had an auto so I was not interested. But a close inspection revealed that the suspension was in next to new condition and there was NO rust. The car had a tiny leak out of the rear main, so small I dont think I would have fixed it. Price: 3800 bucks. The dealer was out to lunch, but I practically sold the damn thing to an older couple on the lot. They were looking at a Saturn, yuck. I pointed out the paint and the rear seal and told them to offer 3K.

You can see where this is going. I would not pay much more than 2500 for this car from your description.

Look on e-bay, there are often 240's on there, and you can get a good idea of actual selling prices.

Have the rear main seal checked for leaks, because if the flame trap looks bad and the "jiggle test" fails, it may be leaking and can be a somewhat expensive repair. What type of uneven wear on the tires? Inside edge, middle, or outside edge, and which of those on which tires? The car may just need an alignment, and since the interior sounds a bit worn, the previous owner may not have bothered with minor things like alignments (not so minor to most of us). Does the car drift or pull to either side if you take your hands off the steering wheel? How about when braking? $6200 is way too high. I think $3500-$4500 is a good range to shoot for.

    Good luck.

Are you sure the mileage is correct? (is it documented)Even if it is correct I think it would be worth 3000 tops,if that.

    Victor:

Don't know where you're located, and I know that there are some areas of the country where used Volvos sell for premium prices, but $6200 for the car you described sounds more than a bit ridiculous. I bought a '90 244 over a year ago with none of the problems you describe (a very clean car albeit with a few more miles) for around $3500. There is a clean, one owner '93 244 in my local paper for $5500.

have you checked to see what canadian prices are like?

withthe US $ being up almost 50% up you might pick up something very inexpensive.

      I bought a 86 245 with 240K km in pretty good shape for C$ 3900.--

You will be hard pressed to find anything that is over 10 years old in showroom condition. So, be prepared to put some money into it; it still beats the cost of a new vehicle (compared to what you get)

My son is telling me of US dealers that pick up any 1/2 ton they can get their hands on because its almost a steal for them here
