rust ?'s and side wagon window seal replacement? 200 85

hey brickboard,

i am considering replacing the window seals on the two long side windows on my wagon. on both sides in the middle there are rust spots under the window only in the inside of the car. if i reach under the window there is not much rust. on the passenger side in the bottom rear corner there is rust as well. the bently or haynes manual says nothing about replacing these windows or seals. i was wondering if i should just leave it or since the rest of the car is in great shape i should consider it. ipd has por15 products that look good but i am scared that if i pull the window out i might run into alot of rust under the seal. is this a job for a beginner when it comes to body repair. where do you get seals for the windows?

thanks will

    BTW,

I'll be using 3M Urethane Resealant. Comes on a caulking tube like you would use in a caulking gun. they also make a WindowWeld setting urethane, used when installing windshields. that adds some structural strength.

Both are available through Eastwood company, but also any auto store (Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, Etc) where body and paint supplies are sold.

yo may have lucked out a bit if your rust is at the REAR corner, rather then at the front, where mine is. In my case, the rust had perferorated the sheet metal, allowed the water to run down inside of the front curve of the rear wheel arch. now, the lower part of the wheel arch and rhe rear of the rocker panel are gone. reconstructing these is becoming a real test of cretive metal working....

Will - sorry for the late response. Go for it. The window pops out, and the gasket in all likelihood can be reused. The goop which was slopped into the gasket back in 1985 has undoubtedly dried and shrunk. Clean it all out with a screwdriver and a rag soaked in some mineral spirits. Treat any rust on the flange of the body with POR15. I used tubes of black RTV -- one for the window/gasket groove and one for the gasket/body flange groove. Reinstall the window and clean up the excess RTV.

Do you know how to pop the window and reinstall it again?

    Rob

Will . Pop out the windows ,clean up the body flange and gasket then reinstall. My 87 leaked for years here and PO never found the leak. The floors rusted , and several other places. After i did the windows the car leaked more. I recently found that the water would run along the glass into the gasket, the slight water pressure would push the water up and over the the gasket into the car. I got some black urethane sealant from a glass guy and masked the glass and the gasket and sealed this area. No more leak, finally. Note the drain holes on the bottom og 89-93 wagons, and duplicate while the gasket is off.Good luck Bob.

      Bob,

Where are the drain holes for these cargo windows?

toward the rear 1/4 of the opening, I see what looks like a pop rivet on the outside, lower horizontal surface (which would be hidden under the gasket).

      is this it?
