Fuel Pump OR Relays? Which is bad??? 200 83

After some dective work, and replacing out various fuel pump relays, the car still idles fine for a while, then suddenly dies. This happens when driving also. I've removed the fuel line & placed a container to catch the raw gas; and after it dies, while cranking, there is no fuel coming out into the container.

After a while, there is fuel pumped, reconnecting the fuel line allows the car to run till it stalls out next time.

My question: How to tell if it is a bad pump or bad relays?

thanks, Genaro

how many miles/years do you have on this pump? If you are pushing 10 years, then the pump is in the process of failing. Replace the pump. typically, if a relay goes bad, it stays bad (no intermittent behavior). one of my pumps would work perfectly out of the car, but when installed it would never work (it had to do with the angle at which the pump was located). You might also want to replace the intank fuel pump while you are at it.

It WAS a bad pump. Aftermarket one from PepBoys or somesuch outfit. Not a Bosch. Had only 5 years or so on it. Dealer was closed today, went to "Somesuch Autoparts" and got an aftermarket replacement (5 years more, hooray!!). Went on without a hitch, and after cleaning out the throttle body with a whole can of cleaner, she purrs once again.Thank you all for helping when you should have been relaxing in front of the TV watching.

      Muchas gracias, Genaro.

My 740 FP relay went bad, and was intermittent. Typically, it would run fine, and then would not restart for a while. I posted here, and got the "resolder it" reply from several people. I took it apart, and saw the flawed joints. I took the advice, resoldered, and have had zero problems for the past 2 months.

It has been years since I worked on a 240 but I'll try to help. If I remember correctly if you jumper fuses 5 and 7 together the fuel pumps will operate with the ignition switch in the run position. This should let you test for pump pressure and volume. If I am wrong about the fuse positions there are plenty of experts on this board that will give you the right answer. Good luck with your 240!

Depends on which injection you have for which fuses are for the pumps.

In general though, you can jumper the pumps. If you can check current with

an ammeter then you will know what condition the pump is in. The higher

the current the more worn the pump is. I once had an 81 that would drive

fine for 15 to 20 minutes. Just enough to strand you somewhere. I replaced

the relay and nothing changed. It turned out to be the fuel pump. It would

run OK for that little while then run so weak the car could only idle.

      No power for driving.
