M47, ATF, MTL and additives 200 89

I know, the best lubricant for my very tired tranny is the MTL by redline BUT: I don't live in the USA and the only place where redline is sold is at Toronto far far away from Trois-Rivières.

At my parts store, they told me to mix an anti-friction additive to my good old ATF oil.

Do you agree?

thanks!

I don't know if i'm the only one but I feel much safer when I do something on my car that has been approved here!!:)

See if you can find AMSOIL ATF locally, or you can order it.

Hm... that sounds a little weird.

Why not just try--if you haven't already--replacing the Type F fluid and seeing what happens from there.

I've noticed that the M47 needs the higher friction of the Type F. That's why I say that an anti-friction additive would be counterproductive.

I tried 10w30 oil in the transmission (synthetic) and it did work OK, but overall, the best feel has been with 1 quart of MTL, 1 quart of Type F. I know it is a strange mix, but I arrived there by mistake (ran out of MTL) and that's what I got. I still like the really low-wear qualities of the MTL, which I can judge by the tiny amount of debris produced by the transmission with that particular fluid. Better than synthetic 10w30.

If you haven't changed out the fluid yet... do it. Change it often. That'll help you out a little too. It sure isn't hard, and the standard type F is really cheap. Also overfill the gearbox. They like that.

Re: M47, ATF, MTL and additives 200 89

      Chris:

I changed my tranny fluid 2 months ago. I was surprised that there was no improvement with my unsmooth-tricky-gear-selector...

I noticed that, of my 2 l. of type F I bought, my M47 was filled just by a little more than 1l. Could my transmission has not enough lubricant?? I made the "little finger" test and it seemed ok... I think that some type of "air balloon" have been formed during the fill... (do you understand?? my english is not very smooth too!)

finally: Can I order this miraculous fluid directly at redline?? Is there another synthetic substitute? I know that 10W30 can do the job but is it the best under MTL?

      merci!!

Aside from fluid (which has been covered very thoroughly by the other posts), have you adjusted your reverse lockout plate? The M47 is funny about going into first gear sometimes, and often is because of the lockout plate being out of adjustment. It is right beneath the rubber shift lever boot, and a very small (like 4mm) socket will adjust it. Or you can play around and try to shift into first while pulling up on the reverse ring on the lever (careful with that).

Also if your shift bushings are shot they'll cause trick shifting too. But more likely just either the transmission or the reverse lockout plate.

Additionally, sometimes a really tough-to-shift trans is because of a dragging clutch, even if just very slightly. My 91 has several of the above problems :)

The juice that you want in there is: Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. DO NOT use NON-synthetic gear oil....in your balmy climate it will act like molasses in well, er, Canada.

The nice thing is in balmy Canada I usually recommend Amsoil synthetic ATF for the M46 'cause the OD, but for the M47, go straight for the Series 2000 75W-90. Hit my link below. 800 numbers will work in eh Canada.

Re: M47, ATF, MTL and additives 200 89

The trick to overfilling is to jack up the car on the driver's side, using blocks/stands (front and rear) to hold it up while you fill the transmission. I got just a soupcon under 2 liters in there using this method. I did this because I read somewhere that the M47 has its upper fill plug placed too low, and that overfilling will help the M47 to last longer. I have no idea what the exact amount should be, I just jacked it up and filled it. Made it easier to fill as well.

There are lots of different kinds of fluids out there that will work just fine, and I haven't tried anything but MTL. What I like about MTL: 1) shifts smoothly when cold, 2) shifts smoothly when warm. Other than that, Redline claims to have_added_friction ingredients to MTL, because the synchro's need friction to work smoothly (see previous sentence).

As to whether they ship, you could always ask--> http://www.redlineoil.com/index.htm

The M47 should take 1.6 quarts according to my Haynes manual, but overfilling is recommended. I'm not sure about ordering redline, but I know you can get an equally good product from http://www.amsoil.com.

        Good luck.
