Replacing Nivomat system 700 85

List,

I've got a 1985 760ti that needs new shocks/sprinngs on the rear. The Nivomat system seems to be shot (does not level, car just slams down after bumps). I'm looking to replace it with something a little more performance minded (Koni or Boge, or Bilstein shocks with IPD Sport Springs), but I'm not sure what this takes. Is there some trick to the Nivomats, or do you just bolt in the new shock/spring like you would on any other car? Thanks in advance,

Re: Replacing Nivomat system 700 91

Check the 700/900 FAQ. I put a detailed step-by-step post in there about how I de-nivomatted my 780 as part of an independent study during my last yr. at West Point. I ended up replacing the springs w/ IPD overload coils for a 200 series wagon, and the shocks (with a minor modification) with Bilsteins. If you have any questions about the process, don't hesitate to email me. Also, I've still got the Nivomats I removed in good working order when I did that project. Make me an offer if you want to replace instead of convert....

Re: Replacing Nivomat system 700 85

You just can't replace the Nivomats with other shocks unfortunately. It is alot more involved. There has to be a frabricated unit that will allow after market shocks to be installed in its place. Check with MVP, or IPD and ask them. They should be able to give you direction.

Re: Replacing Nivomat system 700 85

The only trick is getting the old nivos out. I believe they wont drop down through the oppening in the control arm. You have to compress the shock and lift it up then out of control arm. Otherwise, just unbolt everything and install the new parts. Shouldn't take long if bolts are not too rusted.

Re: Replacing Nivomat system 700 85

I have the same year and same model. However, I haven't had the opportunity to replace the N. shocks.

From what I understand from this board, you have two choices.

1. Replace the old N. shocks with new ones. There is one outfit (mail order that sells them for about 1/2 the dealer price. I believe this is www.shox.com. I am not positive.

2. Use any regular shocks of your choice. But you must first replace the existing springs with standard or sports springs.

My experience: I don't know what type of springs I have. I was told my car was originally equipped with Nivomats. One time I replace the old shocks (mine looked like regular shocks) with ordinary shocks and they work fine without any problem. Again, in your case you definitely have N. shocks and should go with one of the two choices as described.
