'89 760 turbo intercooler problem!?!?!?! 700 1989

as i am to understand it, turbo's increase the pressure inside the engine to above atmospheric pressure, and by doing so increases the acceleration of the vehicle. this is not the case with my volvo. once i engage the turbo on my car, the tachometer jumps 1000 revs, and the engine runs a lot louder, and the turbo pressure gauge doesn't pass atmospheric pressure, and there is very little, if any, acceleration from engaging the turbo. i heard a lot of talk about wastegate, and i was figuring it was simply some worn seals. any suggestions?

thanks for any help.

Take off the turbo inlet hose. It is the large one from the center of the turbo to the air cleaner box. Put your finger inside the turbo inlet port and try to spin the impeller with your finger. If it spins freely and is not gritty, it could be an air leak in a connecting hose or some other place. If the turbo doesn't spin or is gritty, it's new turbo time. Look at the 700/900 faq via the link below under the turbo section.
