Can you supercharge a 240?! 200 1990

Looking for a new project and this is at the top of my list. Any opinions or words of advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anythings possible, given the will and (more importantly!) enough $$$.

Personally, I wouldn't use a 'low-friction' B230F (the ones with huge rod-to-crank side clearances) as a base for a high output engine.

/// Superchargers are essentially Turbos. The supercharger is a WWII tool to allow high altitude from piston driven aircraft engines. I think of a supercharger as a crank shaft driven compressor that pumps air into the engine to allow more fuel to be used in each chamber. The turbo is an exaust gas driven (?) supercharger. You may argue this and we may have a good discussion with more experienced board members.

I do remember in the 50s and 60 there was discussion about the acceleration performance. The supercharger was said to "wind up" to higher speed but it required some distance to achieve the highest performance it was capable of.

from what I've read a SC is a belt driven device. With it you'll have tremendous power and torque gains, but mostly at the lower end of the spectrum. It'll also be extremely expensive, and you'll need a real strong car to handle it. That's all I know.

I understand how a supercharger works and it's benefits. I would like to know if anyone has put a supercharger on 240 or if the parts are available to make it work. Thanks in advance for your help.

          Re: Can you supercharge a 240?! 200 1990

I beleive that it would be fairly simple if you already have a turbo engine because the fuel system and intake can handle positive pressure (as long as you're not looking for very high boost low down).

You'ld most likely need to remove the A/C or P/S and install the supercharger in it's place but then the plumbing for any intercooler would be a little more difficult.

If you wanted to install an entire system the an older engine with the injector in the head would be better since then you don't have to keep any of the old system and you could install "fatter" injectors.

So far the biggest problem would be how to drive the compressor. If you weren't looking for much boost then you could take the easy way out and use a double pulley and run belts off the existing crankshaft but they'll wear very quickly. You'ld probably have to use a wide toothed belt which means changing the pulleys on everything you already have.

Just like everyone else, I'm going to say that it would be better to stick with a turbo........maybe a twin turbo like I've seen on TPC. But could I suggest going for the supercharger.......on a V8. That would be one hell of a car!

          Re: Can you supercharge a 240?! 200 1990

          Hi there

Well, the answer to your question is yes. However I would prefer one of Volvo's fine turbo engines. If you don't like the lag, I suggest an LPT (low pressure turbo) engine from a late 940T. This way you get more power and torque without too much lag.

Remember the reason for not using a supercharger is the fact that it's crank driven which means it takes power to drive it. Therefore it's not as efficient as a turbocharger. However there is a significant downside with turbo's as well. This is the lag, but by choosing a small turbo and retaining a reasonably high compression ratio you can keep this lag at minimum. I know you know this, I wrote it anyway maybe someone will find it useful.

anyway if you have your mind set on a supercharger you should think about what other modifications you will need. first of all you will have to make room for it somewhere on the side of the engine. You will have to lower your CR. Your fuel pump will probably need replacement too. If you want to run high boost, you will need water injection or an intercooler or both. You get these parts from a B21FT, B23FT or B230FT. As I've already said I would get the turbo as well, but if you want a supercharger you should definitely go for it.

          Best regards

I've never heard of one, and I don't think it would be very easy because as far as I know, no one makes a kit to do it. It would be more trouble than it's worth, like putting a turbo on a non-turbo engine.

It would be far easier to find a complete turbo engine from a 740 or 940 and drop it in. Or a V8.
