overdrive downshift without warning 700 1989

Greetings- I have a 89 740 with 4spd Auto trans. When it's cold outside (lower than 32F) and just starting out on highway cruising for a couple of miles, car shifts out of overdrive into drive with no warning. Engine revs way up. It's like when you press the OD cancel button on the shifter (the little light comes on). Frantically when I press the button it won't respond for several tries, but eventually will go back into overdrive after pressing it long enough. Then it's usually fine for the rest of my drive (about 30 miles). Trans fluid is full. It never does it in the summer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

/// Get under the car and look at the transmission. I bought a car with this problem and the trouble was that some one had been into the transmission and left out the crush washers as well as the copper washers when they put it back together. The transmission will drop out of overdrive if the fluid is low. You may not have this trouble with the auto transmission but check the fluid first.

When you look notice the wire to the overdrive solonoid. Is it tight and in place or hanging off. Start there.

Probably an OD relay problem. You likely can fix it by resoldering the contacts inside the relay. Check the 700-900 FAQ for details about this.
