Whining transmission in morning 200 1989

I've been noticing now that we are getting cold mornings that my 240's transmission is whining. This happens for about the first couple of miles of travel only in the morning. This is especially noticable on deceleration where it sounds like a police siren winding down. Does anyone know what this is? Is it harmful? Should I investigate?

Re: Whining transmission in morning 200 1984

I was just checking and found that others have the same noise. It just got colder here in Iowa yesterday and my transmission (4-sp manual w/OD) started whining like a police siren also. It has not done this before. The noise seems not to be from the rear axle but nearer the trans. The rear end differential housing is up to level. Is that the same thing that you are calling a "tail-shaft"? Does it make a difference what type of "transmission fluid" is used. Manual says F or G. My parts store says there are only 3 basic types. Thanks

Re: Whining transmission in morning 200 1989

Perhaps it could be your tailshaft centre support bearing. These make a funny whining sound on their way out. Mine needs to be fixed, and does only seem to make the noise in the morning, when it is cold. It is reasonably hot where I live (Australia- almost summer), but in winter it did make a noise like what you described when coming to an intersection. Have it checked out.

My 86 244GL started with the noise on cold mornings,I sprayed my center bearing with Teflon spray lubricant two years ago and it has not made the whining sound since.

Kyle-

Mine did this too. I have a very small leak at the tail shaft bushing, and my level was a little low. That fixed it.

Re: Whining transmission in morning 200 1989

if the low fluid isn't it ck. for free movement of the trans. kickdown cable ;connects to trhotttle drum . pull all slack from cable w/eng. running , you will see how loud it get's.
