/// If you cannot spell BRAKE, should you be doing this work? Since this can kill you and others on the highway I suggest you watch this work being done. It is simple and straight forward. BUT___ someone just starting out can dream up things to do that will be fatal.

To repace pads, open the bleed screw, force the old pad back until the piston is retracted. Immediately tighten the bleed screw. Remove the holding keys and remove the pins holding the pads. What you have will depend on the brand of caliper. Replace the first pad then open the opposite bleed screw. Force the second piston set back and replace the second pad. Close the second bleed screw. Move to the opposite side and repeat. This system does not force dirty fluid back up the brake lines but does remove the ammount of fluid that was in the piston chamber. Top off the master cylinder with fluid and pump before you move the car. The pedal should be hard and should not go to the floor. First law of brake work--don't tear down both sides at the same time. Leave one side so you will have something to compare your work with.

Unless you have the tools to measure leave the checking of rotors to your machine shop. The minimum size allowed is cast into the rotor at the base of the top hat. Yes you will have to remove the rotor to find that.

From memory, the disc thickness new is about 0.88" and allowable is 0.80 minimum. This needs to be checked though. The brake job is almost painless unless the piston seals are torn or you send a spring flying into turf as I did last time. Simply remove the tiny cotter pins on the pad locating pins, tap the pins out carefully watching to unhook the springs before they unhook themselves and pull the pads. Transfer the pad shims, depress the pistons carefully with a non- sharp tool (I use the Volvo jack handle or I vise grip the old pads just before removing) and slide the new pads in. Tap in the pins, install the springs and cotter pins and that's it. Just pump the brakes to build up pressure before you head out for a test drive.
