Volvo Repair Chicago Area - transmission 700 1991

I am looking for an honest and capable Volvo Repair shop in the Chicago area, preferably north of chicago.

I have a transmission problem on a 740 1991 wagon. The car has trouble going into 4th gear. The problem is intermittent. Fixing it is beyond my limited skills, however, my experience with volvo dealers has been very negative so i don't want to bring it to one of them.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I was hoping for a volvo repair place within 20 miles or so of evanston, IL. That way i could conveniently drop off or pick up the car. Rockford would be a little bit far away unless you know of a really excellent mechanic.

You may have an electrical, not transmission, problem: your overdrive relay may be gone. Take it first to a Volvo indy mechanic to test the relay and solenoid before you expose yourself to a tranny shop, where a rebuild is always the attempted sale.

Try Chicago Classic Imports. They're located at the intersection of Western and Lunt. Storefront is called Swedish Car Parts, shop is in the back. Ask for Tony. Very easy to deal with, is very fair, and knows Volvo's very well. Very reasonable labor rates as well. Would be no more than 20min. from Evanston. Hope this helps.
