How fast would this car be... ALL

Thank you so much for at least reading this letter, and I will be much more thankful if you can answer my question. How fast is a volvo 140? Any idea of it's 0-60 time? I ask because I found one that has a B 20E engine, short shift, ipd sways, and an IPD cam kit, for sale. I like the looks of this car and the price, but I need to know if it will be able to keep up with hondas and maybe acura's. Speed is very important to me because I am a high school student and those are the kinds of cars my friends drive, I don't want to be one of the crowd, I want to buy something unique, but I still want to be able to race. I hope you can understand my gibberish and help me out. Feel free to email me or reply on here.

Thanks

Will hockett

Re: How fast would this car be... ALL

I once owned a 73 144. It was the slowest car I ever owned. I also had a 72 142 with a B20E rebuilt by a performance shop. It didn't have any special cam or anything but was considerably faster. It was not as fast as my freinds Acura V-Tech, but was still very fun to drive. There's a lot more to the 140 than all out speed. Drive the Volvo for a while, if its in good shape, you'll know what I mean.

As for 0-60...not really sure. Based on the cars I could keep up with and the cars I couldn't, I'd say somewhere around 10 seconds (maybe more).

Re: How fast would this car be... 140-160

I've got a 68 144 (smaller motor) with a slightly tired motor. This

car is not fast.

I've got a 70 164 with a not very tired motor. This car is much faster

than anything I've ever owned. It can and has made owners of 3 year old

hondas hang their heads in shame. Not there was ever an unlawful display

of speed or local speeds limit violated.

A b20 fuel injected street performance cam equiped 144 will be tolerably

fast, but will *not* beat a modern car in speed. It will last longer,

look better, and be cheaper to fix, but will not beat a modern car in a

race.

Instead of trying to beat them in a race, make fun of them for driving

a car their mum bought them. Or better yet, don't worry about what

other people think of you.

Re: How fast would this car be... ALL

/// You've got to be kidding. If that is a standard b20 you will really have to wind the clock spring with that big key sticking out of the trunk to get high performance. Try running the hamsters in teams of two or three to improve 0 to 60. I have driven a 73-144 for twenty six years and I ocasionally hop out and run along the side to make adustments to the mirrors. (I'm over the hill, totally disabled and I can keep up on foot.)

High performance is a specialty. There are racing and high performance sites. You may find some one here to help you.

Re: How fast would this car be... ALL

Is your's a B20F? I think the B20E would be faster, especially with the IPD cam kit already installed. Do you know how much power the ipd cam adds? The ipd website doesn't say, nor does the catalog, and I was kind of curious about how much it actually helps.

Re: How fast would this car be... ALL

/// Changing the cam will not "add power". A cam will exchange power from one end of the rpm range to another. Only increasing the amount of fuel in the chamber (turbo or super charger) or increasing the size of the chamber will increase horsepower. A great deal of money is spent on fine tuning the engine and this is good. Some small gain can be attributed to "super blueprinting". Not much, though, is ever gained given the weight of the Volvo versus the horsepower of the b20. There are other sites and I have read that there are differences in the blocks, some being heavier and thus more comfortable to bore out.

Go to the links section of the board. Try the Yahoo clubs 1800 list. Even in this list the racing, when discussed, is geared to skill at high speed not muscle 0 to 60 power.
