Oil, Very Important 700 1990

I can't seem to remember from my auto tech class if there is any harm in switching from regular to synthetic oil. Is there any special steps that need to be taken, and are there any possible adverse effects? Thanks.

Re: Oil, Very Important 700 1990

I recommend using a good engine flush first. Best I know of are made by AMSOIL or BG. If you don't, or won't, use a flush, go ahead and change. Watch for any sudden increase in oil consumption. If you see that, change the filter and top off (the synthetic has cleaned out gunk and delivered it to the filter enough to start plugging it). You might want to drop the first batch of synthetic after 3-4,000 miles, particularly if you don't flush.

Dick,

I have a 760 TB with 107,000 miles. I also thought of changing to

synthetic. With Mobil 1 what grade is good for Northeast winter and

summer?

Many Thanks

Re: Oil, Very Important 700 1990

Today there is no risk except for doing this in sludgy engine. There is a faint risk that oil seals may leak but this would be for an old seal that is hard nad is only sealing due to a ridge of oil varnish built up on the surface it seals. The synthetic will likely dissolve the varnish and the seal will leak then. A seal in this condition would have leaked before long with convnetional oil also.
