Will 14" 240 wheels work on my 940? 900 1994

I have yet to get spare wheels and snowtires for my recently acquired 945. It has 16" alloys with summer tires. But I do have 4 14" all weather tires on my '81 245. I am thinking of swapping the wheels between cars for a trip over the North Cascades for Thanksgiving. I am likely to encounter snow and ice on the passes. I also have chains for the 14" tires. Is this a workable idea? I'm pretty sure the circumferences of the 14" and 16" tires are similar, so my speedometer will read ok. And I know the 940 won't handle as well on the dry pavement, so I'll have to make allowance for that. Any other problems you can forsee?

Re: Will 14" 240 wheels work on my 940? 900 1994

I just tried this swap, and it works one way but not the other. The 16" 940 alloys fit on my 240, but the 14" steel wheels from the '81 240 do not fit on the 940. The center opening on the steel wheels is too small to fit over the hub.

The wheels will fit your car without other problems than the already mentioned. Mind that 700 suspension/wheel setup is basically same as the 900 (960 95- excepted) and also used rims identical with the 200´s until 1988.

But those 14" tires profile height won´t improve handling :-) - I´d go for a new set in the correct 15" dimension asap.
