glove box door falls open 200 1990

I drive a 1990 240 and recently I've been experiencing increased frequency in the glove box door falling open when I roll over slight bumps, etc. I looked at the mechanism, and I can't see any obvious problems. I just suspect that the clasp has lost some strength for some reason.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,

Matt

dont laugh but velcro does the trick for me. epoxe several strips around the glove box / & where it meets the box frame and it will never unwantedly come down again.

    good luck

    Thanks, Tim, Philip and Robert!

I appreciate your suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes. I initially thought of tacking on a small magnet to hold it shut better, but I might try one of your suggestions first!

Matt, check the bottom hinges; on my 88 the plastic moulded box which also structurally forms the hinges finally cracked and would no longer hold the latch shut because the door sagged. That May be it; if so, requires replacing the box assembly (you use the same door/latch), Robert

Re: glove box door falls open 200 1984

I just glued a small piece of hard, black plastic onto the lip that the latch hooks under to hold the door closed. Used urethane glue - hasn't come off yet. It took a bit of filing to get it just right. If your latch itself is loose and moving around in the door, then you'll want to fix that 1st; this often just requires removing the snap ring and bending it so it holds better.

I drive a 1983 240turbo with the same problem. I've rigged up a little piece of wire that sticks to the top of the door and creates more to grasp the mechanism. The problem (at least with mine) is that the bolts holding the latch on had loosened a bit and so the latch doesn't quite hold tight enough. My solution is anything but permanent and so I too am looking for something better. If you find anything out, please email me. Thanks.
