Cold start problem 200 83

I have an automatic `83 volvo turbo wagon. I`ve had it less than a year, and it drives great.

A couple of months ago it started dying when I would take my foot off the gas quickly. Well I got tired of that and took it into the shop. They replaced a couple of hoses around the turbo, put in a new turbo valve and a new ignition rotor.

It doesn`t die any more, but now since I got it back, it has trouble with the cold start.

I took it back and they replaced the cold stat ignition, but it didn`t change anything. It seems as though gas just isn`t reaching the engine, it chokes, sputters, pings and dies. It starts fine after the car has been driven a bit..

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of problem. I'm taking it back into the shop and would love some ideas to give my mechanic.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the help.

Re: Cold start problem 200 83

It could be 1) the connector has fallen off the thermal time switch. It is common. The ts switch grounds the cold start injector allowing it to fire. The firing time is longer with colder temps. The ts could have failed but more commonly the wires fall off. The ts switch is under the third intake runner and is a PITA to change.

It could also be 2) a bad control pressure regulator. At least in a normally aspirated K-jet (and the turbo also is K-jet) this is another cold start problem part. Stumbles and dies until warmed up for a minute or two, then runs fine.

Could also be the Air Control Valve. Could be clogged with oil. Costs about $175. Its under the Intake. 2"x4" cylinder with 2 3/4" hoses. Pain the ass to change. Have fun.
