Tail-Pipe rattle??? ALL

Anyone...

I have an '86 240D that I picked up cheap... I don't know how many miles are on it as the Odometer is broken... the problem I have is that at various speeds (anywhere from 20mph up to around 70mph) if I take my foot off the gas (automatic tranny)I get a very load rattle/knocking sound from the back end. I think it might be that the tail pipe, which looks new, may have been bent wrong during the install and is hitting the frame. For the same speed that makes a knock, if I put it in neutral the knocking goes away so I don't think it is the drive shaft... Comment/opinions would be appreciated

Please e-mail me as I don't get a chance to cruise the net often and I would like to get an answer soon... it is driving me nuts and makes me wonder what kind of damamge I might be doing...

Thanks for the time.

Re: Tail-Pipe rattle??? ALL

/// I don't know but I've been told that the cross pins at the jack points serve as tie points to secure a child or really small person under the car to make these observations while you drive. While I don't recommend that, putting the car on a lift and making observations of the bright spots where the exhaust is hitting the frame or axle will eliminate the problem

Re: Tail-Pipe rattle??? ALL

You have to get under there and find where the exhaust is making noise. Have someone you trust with your life rev the engine through various speeds while you get up close and personal with the underside of your car. You may well be correct in assuming the exhaust is at fault. Confirm this by close observation then correct the poorly installed section.
